Yeah, I won this in a giveaway, but I cannot make myself get past the half-way point. I've never read a Nina Lacour book before, but I'm thinking her writing style just isn't for me. It falls very flat to me and it makes it hard for me to care. Also, the timeline jumps around--a lot--with like... little to no reference as to when it happens?
Idk. It's just largely disappointing, but that might just be a me thing. Even though I got halfway, I'm not going to rate it because I don't even know what I'd give it. No spoilers, but I'd also look up some trigger warnings regarding this book before you buy it. I didn't and ended up very uncomfortable with some of the things going down here. Nothing was explicit, but it was stuff I wasn't aware of and don't like to read about (which may have shadowed my reading experience a bit).

So good. I really enjoyed Yerba Buena. I found myself thinking about the book while I was out. This book is not advertised as a love story but it absolutely should be. The main characters first fall in love with themselves and then each other. So beautifully written.

My major complaint is that the romance wasn't quite as built up and fleshed out as I would have liked - which is not to say it wasn't believable, because it really was. I loved the imagery in the writing, which was somehow both simple and gorgeous: "...but now she was carrying a secret. She felt it in her bloodstream, turning her bolder. She glowed with it." And I enjoyed the entwined stories of Emilie and Sara; their histories and inspirations and goals were all so richly described (I found Sara's story more engaging - albeit tragic - and perhaps therefore a lot easier to follow than Emilie's). It could be a bit boring plot-wise, again I think because their lives were kept separate for most of the book .

Didn't make me cry as much as her other books, but just as lovely and well-written (and I did still cry multiple times)

I really enjoyed the story of two women just finding their way in this world. I felt like I could relate to them so well, the writing was beautiful and I loved that the romance was subtle.

You know when you walk into a house and you look around at all the details and you think, “It’s nice! Just doesn’t feel lived-in”… that’s about how I feel.

I kept pushing this book to the bottom of the stack because, based on what I had heard, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to put it down. Just as expected, I ate this one up in less than 24 hours. The way the author introduces characters and settings is so visceral that this book sucks you in completely. I got attached to the characters in all their complexity, and it was incredible to see them navigate love, loss, and trauma. LaCour’s writing flows so well and illuminates the different ways that people cope and evolve to carry the weight of the past. This one will definitely be on the reread list.
