I can totally understand why other people would love this but it was just OK for me. There was just something missing that prevented me from feeling immersed in the world and the characters even though I enjoyed the writing and the uniqueness. It could have totally just been the wrong time for me to read this as I am in sort of a fantasy slump too
I increased to 4 stars after thinking about it more. There isn’t much I can fault it on!

There's only so many pages I can take of reading about a character dying of the flu and internal bleeding. Monologues weren't entirely interesting either.

This book ended up being a lot of fun. Everybody sucks in this book. Everybody is a narcissistic asshole with few redeeming qualities. However, there are enough parts that made me chuckle and the world, plot, and writing are good enough that enjoyed this book quite a bit.
Essentially, in this world, if somebody believes something enough, it can become reality. If said person gets a bunch of other people to believe the same thing, it becomes even more powerful. The cost of this is that these people that can bend reality to their will eventually go insane and generally die in some spectacular fashion. In this way, there are really no rules. And while this gives the author plenty of ways to ignore plot pitfalls (in a sense this could be viewed as lazy writing) this book still worked for me just because it was pretty fun.
Spoilers: In a nutshell this book is about a guy, Konig, who has set himself up as the head of a new religion that will create their own tailor-made god. They did this by raising a bunch of kids and telling them that they will one day ascend and become a god. Basically all of them have failed except Morgen.
Also, we have three cutthroats; Bedeckt, Wichtig, and Stehlen. The leader, the Swordmaster, and the thief, who go around getting up to no good. Stealing and fighting their way through life. They eventually catch wind of Konig's plan to create a god and come up with the idea of kidnapping Morgen in order to ransom him back to Konig as one final job to set themselves up for life. Of course, nothing goes as planned...

Incredibly original world and premise, but very brutal and deeply unsettling execution.

This was the most vile, disgusting, gory, twisted, demented book I’ve ever read in my entire life.
I fucking loved it. Absolutely lived up to the hype.

I loathed every character in this story except maybe morgen. He was done dirty by everyone around him, poor thing. This book was nasty for the sake of being nasty.
