I’m not entirely sure how I felt about this one. The narrative voice was interesting, though it often seemed like the narrator was too mature for her age (even with the whole genius thing, she seemed to have way more insight than a 13 year old should have). I liked No’s character, and I wanted more about her backstory. We get a lot about her mom, but I wanted more of No herself. One thing the book did well was rounding out the secondary characters. Lou’s family dynamic was well done, and I liked her mom’s arc. That being said, I wish Lucas’s character had gotten some more attention. I would’ve really liked to know what a 17 year old boy with a devil-may-care attitude had in common with Lou who, let’s not forget, is only 13 and a genius. The age gap just struck me as weird. All in all, this was a quick and engaging read, but I’m not in a hurry to read anything else by this author.

It was slow for the first 70 pages or so. (3 stars) Then it picked up speed, reaching 4 stars by halfway through. The last 100 pages or so were 5-star quality. I would've given it a 4.5 star average if it weren't for the ending, which felt kinda deep and meaningful... but kinda unresolved as well. So it became 4 stars.
It's still an excellent book that I would definitely recommend, with heart-wrenching observations about humans and existence, and fascinating, dynamic characters. I feel like I came away with new knowledge, and new ideas to consider. The writing was odd, but about 1/3 of the way through, I really got into it. There were a few grammatical errors that at first really ticked me off, but after a while, it just enhanced the protagonist's voice, giving her this touch of youth that I found really beautiful.
Overall, this was an excellent book. Don't read it if you want a faster, more action-packed pace though.
