This instalment of the Roy Grace series is told from the viewpoints of several possible culprits as well as Grace and bounces between the present day and 1997/1998. The Shoe Man has been referred to in previous books but now we get to read the whole story. I found this one a lot more gripping that the last couple of books. The character of Sandy seems really unlikeable which doesn't seem right that Grace had been missing her so much. I thought these glimpses of her could easily have been left out as I was expecting it to cover her disappearance but didn't.

I have to pace myself with thrillers. I can only read or listen to one every so often. Some can leave me with a headache from the eye-rolling with the portrayal of the serial killer's MO and the pursuing agents/cops following the clues and grudgingly falling in love (since it's usually a hot FBI agen and the rogue hottie and gruff police detective of interchangeable sexes)....
Then there's the thriller with a scary believable serial scary and the detective who follows all the clues and sometimes gets it wrong.
That's this thriller with Detective Superintendent Grace. The clues sometimes lead him and his team astray. He has to follow each one though. The serial scary is a serial rapist with a high-dollar shoe fetish.
It's creepy and quick-turn-the-page paced. I need to add more of this series to my WWBL.

This book is so full of stereotypes, misogyny and thinly veiled prejudice that it feels like someone puked a chewed copy of the Daily Mail on to a printer. The book structure is painting by numbers. In way both of these are a real shame because the plot is interesting.

Airport churn-a-lot that tries more with format than yr usual potboiler. So why's the editing so bad? Stray words at the end of sentences, dialogue out of sequence, titles dancing around. Drove my sub-sense crazy. it

Very readable and well told, but the crimes are so revoltingly creepy and violent that I almost quit several times. I doubt I'll read any more in the series despite what Patrick Anderson says: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/12/19/AR2010121903763.html
