Solid book that made me wonder how I wasn’t murdered or kidnapped as a child.

I think this is one of those books that you have to read as a kid to get the full magic of it and unfortunately I didn't. Now, as an adult, I thought it was a fun story. I loved the characters (especially Marshall), and I think it's a fun way to introduce Egyptology to kids.

Alice has just moved into a new apartment with her grandmother. She meets Melanie, a girl her own age, who also has a lively and active imagination.

One day the girls stumble into the lot behind an antique store and find a world in which Egypt comes alive. They create elaborate stories in which they are priestesses, goddesses, and queens.

But other things are afoot in their neighborhood and as the game gets bigger, it gets more dangerous.

Wow, I don't know if I've read a book that so accurately captures what it's like to be a child. The very very end fell flat for me, but the denouement does a wonderful job of becoming a metaphor for the end of childhood. A lovely and subtle coming-of-age story.

Definitely held his attention but there was a lot of build up without a lot of delivery in my opinion.

What I did like: diversity of characters, tough concepts, the fact that kids can band together over imaginative play.
