You definitely need to have read the first book in this series “Bone Music” in order to truly understand the characters and the back story in “Blood Echo”.
This book opens a few months after the end of book 1. Charley is attempting to have some type of a normal life with Luke and the rest of her rag-tag family, while also working with Cole and his pharmaceutical company to use her new powers for good. But it’s turns out harder than Charley thought to be a “superhero” and a normal girl, especially as she keeps wondering if her upbringing with serial killer parents makes her normal at all.
I don’t want to give too much away with my review, but if you liked book 1 you will absolutely love book 2. And then end up like me waiting eagerly for book 3 in Charley’s adventure. This is a great action packed thriller with a touch of the supernatural. A great read.
** I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. ARC provided by NetGalley**

Blood echo does not disappoint. Charley starts out hunting down a killer but ends up with a lot more trouble closer to home.
I highly recommend this series.
I highly recommend this series.

The second book in this series from Christopher Rice. For me, this volume was not as strong as the first. It lacked the really engaging narrative thrust that made the first book so hard to put down. It was still enjoyable. The final third was very engaging and again left me excited for the next book.

Christopher Rice’s Blood Echo (Book 2 in the Burning Girl Series) is a fun and fast-paced affair that spends some time establishing the new status quo in the wake of the events of the first book. Thankfully, Christopher Rice never hesitates to upset the status quo. Things gets thrown into a series of upheavals that result in a brief mystery, dramatic revelations, and a shattering climax that threatens to ruin everything our protagonist Charley holds dear. I greatly enjoyed this book (read it in two sittings); however, I also had some of the same issues I had with the previous installment in the series.
First, what I enjoyed most about the series. Once again, the cast of characters are fun, morally grey individuals with unique set of beliefs and desires that fuel their actions. On top of that, this installment is far better paced than the first installment with enough action and intensity in the plot to warrant its moniker as “A Burning Girl Thriller.” Next, what I didn’t enjoy. My main point here is that I’ve read Christopher Rice’s other novels-I know he has the ability to stretch out a mystery and give it time to grow and gain urgency. There’s none of that here (just like with Bone Music). The mysteries are resolved quickly, leaving the reader with chapter after chapter of overly involved internal monologues by the characters in the central portion of the novel as they decide what to do and fill each other in until the climax hits.
Overall, I think Blood Echo is an improvement on its predecessor and does a great job of crafting a fun and engaging story populated with interesting characters. The main downside is if you’re looking for intrigue and mystery, the Burning Girl series does not provide-everything is resolved quickly and cleanly. That being said, Blood Echo is a fun, quick read-great for the beach or a long bus ride!

Let me start off by saying, this series has a lot going on. Both books are books that you need to read at a comfortable pace, absorb every last detail. There is no insignificant detail.
This book picks up not long after where the first book left off. The first book set this one up perfectly. This one hit the ground running from the start. The author wasted no time dilly-dallying, he dove right into this story from the very beginning. I need to thank him for that.
I couldn't put this one down. It was great. The band of characters really do help make this series a series I highly recommend. From the plot to the characters' unique personalities, I am definitely looking forward to more books in this series.
Like I said, there is a lot going on. Aside from the main plot, there are a lot of ethical questions that arise for the characters. Morality is tested. Limits are tested. Trust is tested. I think these elements add some serious points to the plot itself.
If you haven't started this series, I am not sure what you are waiting for. This is definitely one of those series you will wish you had started sooner once more books come out.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second book in the Burning Girl series. I enjoyed the first book and this one is good but not quite as good as the first. I would still recommend this book to fans of crime fiction.
Charlotte aka Charley has worked out a deal with Cole and his secret group of global CEO's who dabble in experimentation on people to make them/society better. They will find bad people aka serial killers for her to take down using her superhuman strength and she can go on living her life in the small town of Altamira, California with her new boyfriend Luke. While she may have agreed to the deal she is still leery of Cole. Her hunch is proven true when he brings trouble and danger literally to her doorstep. She has to fight with herself on doing what she wants and doing what is best for those around her and not becoming something others want or can exploit.
Mr. Rice does a good job of keeping the characters interesting and giving us hints to their backstories and what made them who they were and at the same time keeping them slowly evolving and growing. He does a fair job with the main female character which most men have a hard time writing well.
The conspiracy of Cole's company is written believably and makes me want to know more. While the players are all psychopaths they get on well enough that you don't hate them but still want to know about them and what they are up to.
Charley's internal struggle is quite obvious but well done and you can agonize with her on what she should and could do and what that means for her future, the future of those she loves and the morality impact it could have on those close and society as a whole, though mostly on those she loves and on herself. We can understand her way of thinking and theories of what could be.
The two plots in this book work well in they don't get in the way of each other and you can go from one to the other without trouble. Both plots are also believable and applicable to the real world today. While the solutions are obviously fiction there are hints of things that could be done in reality as well. The violence is present but not overwhelming which is a nice change from authors who just want to disgust you with as much gore as possible. You get the image of how terrible the crimes are without wanting to skim or skip.
I look forward to the next book in the series.

I gave this 4 stars because I would have liked to see more of The Burning Gil in action. It had a good story line, but just not as much action and suspense as Bone Music. I think we got to see more of Cole. But, Charlie is so bad ass and I absolutely love her. I hope in the next book we get to really see her in more intense situations. Overall the book was great.
