Not the worst (see 'Memnoch' for that) but certainly the most boring of all the Chronicles so far. I pretty much gave up on the series after 'Queen', but since I bought the whole lot, I'm wading through it still. However, it took me this long to realise that the problem with Rice's writing is that there is no beginning, middle and end. Funnily enough, real life biographies have more sense of a dramatic arc than this book, for example. The 'exotic' settings have become old hat pretty much since the second book and even if Marius is Rice's most developed character as some here claim--although I'm not sure--his predicament is also pretty much a rehash of whatever the other characters in the series have gone through in their respective tales. Also, the secondary characters in this book become real mainly through the fact that the knowledgeable reader connects them with earlier books in the series. Not worth the 570 pages. And don't these vampires ever shut up?

I hate Marius so this was kind of hard to get through but the descriptions of what everyone else said and did made it easier. Every other character was way more interesting than Marius.

So far in the series had evidence of Marius being Weird about Pandora and Armand, and now Marius expanded that to Zenobia (which, Eudoxia was also creepy. Honestly her and Marius should have just remained together and left everybody else alone) and Bianca. He's such a creep and is so pretentious and full of himself (and not in an entertaining way like Lestat) ugh I just can't stand him. Only turns Bianca because he was in trouble and needed her help, then pretends he would've done it anyway because he just loves her so much, then moves them to a town in the hopes of seeing Pandora again and lies to Bianca about it. When he finally does find Pandora and she doesn't want to get back with him he begs her and says he'll leave Bianca for her. But when it doesn't work he goes back to Bianca saying "my precious darling, because I love you, I love you more than I have ever loved you, and I need you." Bianca's response is so delicious though "I heard the things you said to her. And I'm leaving you." The beginning of chapter 33 is my favorite part of the whole book, Marius begging Bianca to stay with him as she calmly gets everything in order to leave and doesn't give him an inch.

"But what I want now is to talk of you and me," I said, "and how it's always been between us."
"Yes, you may do that if you wish," she said, "if it makes the pain less for you, but Marius, I am going."

Though Pandora actually having written to Marius to ask for help soured it for me. Girl, stand up!

I wish Marius had killed Santino at the end so Maharet would either kill him or lock him up for eternity so we won't have to hear from him again. But alas, we'll probably still hear about him in the rest of the series. I just hope it isn't too much.

Fuck Marius, idc.

He annoys me so much! Like, I don’t fucking care if everyone leaves you! You deserve it!

That being said, I am not so biased that I don’t mind admitting to being interested in the early parts of his life. I was all ears for his stints in Rome, Constantinople, and Florence.

But yeah giving up on Armand that easily when you… are LITERALLY. IMMORTAL. astounds me.

And here he is with his obsession with Pandora. I don’t fucking care! Leave her alone!

Bianca was right to leave him because fuck him!

Anyway, so Santino just dies like that. I barely knew him so I kind of don’t really care but also, I don’t know, I would’ve liked to know more about him 🤷‍♀️

Got bored a little with the sections that repeated parts of other books. Liked the scene near the beginning where the Roman vampire and the Viking vampire went to a nightclub. We've found Daniel now, and I'm convinced his autistic (I am also autistic).

I enjoyed this story a lot, but, surprisingly, it made me dislike Marius. I'm rooting for Bianca to find a girlfriend (although she was probably killed by Akasha). Anyway, can't wait to read this story from Lestat's point of view.

if i were akasha, and i had only marius de pedophile for company for the last two thousand years? i, too, would try to kill all the world's men the moment i woke up. in fact, i think i would be Worse.
