لطالما تعلّقت تعلقاً شديداً بحضارة أجـدادي ، ورجوت أن أراها تنهض من جديد ، وتزدهر ، وتنتعش ، وتستعيد ألقها ، وعظمتها ، وسخاءها ، وطاقتها الإبداعية ، لكي تبهر مرة أخرى البشرية جمعاء . ولم يخطر ببالي يوماً أنني سأضطر في خريف حياتي إلى وصف مسارها بكلمات مثل شقاء ، وأسى ، وضياع ، وكارثة ، وتقهقر ، وغرق ، وهلاك ...

ولكن كيف أصف بغير ذلك هذا المشهد المتهالك الذي يتجلى أمام أعيننا؟ تلك البلدان التي تتفكك ، تلك المجتمعات الموجودة منذ آلاف السنين التي تُقتلع من جذورها ، وتلك الآثار النبيلة التي تدمر ، وتلك المدن المبقورة ، ثم ذلك الجموح الذي لا يوصف للوحشية – رجم وقطع رؤوس وبتر أعضاء وصلب وإعدام غوغائي – وكل ذلك يُصور ويُبث ، لكي لا يفوّت سائر الكوكب مشهداً واحداً؟

قلما أفضى الحقد على الذات ، في تاريخ الشعوب ، إلى مثل تلك الأعمال المتطرفة . وعوضاً عن الارتقاء بعظمة حضارتهم ، عوضاً عن التأكيد على إسهامها في المغامرة البشرية في ميادين الرياضيات أو العمارة أو الطب أو الفلسفة ، عوضاً عن تذكير أبناء عصرهم بأمجاد قرطبة وغرناطة وفاس والإسكندرية وبغداد ودمشق أو حلب ، يُظهر أحفاد بناة الأمس العظام بأنهم غير جديرين بالإرث المؤتمنين عليه ، لا بل وتشير الدلائل إلى أنهم يسعون عمداً إلى إحراج عشاق حضارتهم ، وإعطاء حجج لمنتقديهم . في الماضي ، كان أولئك الذين يكرهون العرب يُتهمون بمعاداة الأجانب والحنين إلى الحقبة الاستعمارية ؛ وفي أيامنا الراهنة ، يشعر الجميع بأنه يجوز لهم كراهيتهم من دون تأنيب ضمير ، باسم الحداثة أو العلمانية أو حرية التعبير أو حقوق المرأة .

Learnt a few things about the history of the Levant and the Middle East

It’s both uplifting (we can technically do anything) and devastating: societies across the world are eroding. We are both materially better off and morally stagnant.

Marxism had a good shot at changing the world and failed

Minorities matter and strengthen a country. A country’s ability to tolerate differences is indicative of its cohesion.

Nothing is set in stone, everything can change for the better and worse

Cons:

Too wordy, emotionally laden and repetitive - perhaps the translation?

I don’t see how this is groundbreaking analysis. Little felt novel

A vast, yet personal, exploration of how did the Middle East get to where it is. Maalouf writes warmly and generously

"Il y a un équilibre à trouver, pour chaque génération, entre deux exigences : se protéger de ceux qui profitent du système démocratique pour promouvoir des modèles sociaux qui anéantiraient toute liberté ; et se protéger aussi de ceux qui seraient prêts à étouffer la démocratie sous prétexte de la protéger."

Second livre d'Amin Maalouf après Les Identités Meurtrières, ce Naufrage des civilisations est une mise en garde (bien que déjà trop tardive ?) nécessaire pour le futur de nos civilisations et nos chances de construire réellement ensemble une société où chacun pourrait trouver sa place. Battant en brèche les politiques tant identitaires que sécuritaires, Amin Maalouf pose un regard juste et critique sur l'état de notre monde en partant de sa terre natale. Nécessaire à lire quelque soit ses convictions politiques, pour regarder en face les errements de chacun.
