Update: finished all 3 volumes. It stays pretty good but remains totally un-subtle. It wasn't until volume 3 that I noticed the intentional references to both Animal Farm and 1984. (The pigs, lead by Napoleon, think they are "more equal" than other animals. The sympathetic rule-breaker is named Winston.)

---

Read with a book club. In the story, the "people" are all partly animals, like pigs, mice, wolves, etc. The government penalizes any sexual relationships between different species, or between same-sex couples. The allegory seems too on-the-nose for me. Too obvious a parallel to discrimination based on race and sexual orientation. But, after a while, an additional level of the story opens up with some mysterious feuding groups and mythic creatures. So, I'll keep reading.

Plenty of "sexy" pictures, which might be disturbing if and when you realize you are finding a pig's breasts or a wolf's butt sexy. Also expect bloody violence.

I saw this on Hoopla a while ago and wanted to read. I finally picked it up and I’m glad because I really enjoyed it. I thought it was going to be erotic but it was more than that. I really love the illustrations and Leslie is so pretty. Once you turn 25 in this world you have to find someone in you species to marry it is illegal to be with someone outside your species or of the same sex. This obviously remind me of segregation and laws that were in place that perverted same sex marriage. Leslie has been having dreams about a wolf and is turning 25 in this Volume so she has to go into a government program that helps her find a match. Though her date is high-jacketed by an unknown organization. It was a really enjoyable story, illustrations and coloring were amazing.

I kept seeing this pop up on Hoopla and decided to give it a try and after the first chapter I was bored as hell and found the story way to wordy for such a simple overall theme.
Different species aren’t allowed to marry each other, and government regulates this and controls the entire population in regards to this, including having some kind of reproductive program for unmarried species.

Of course the main girl who is a Pig fantasizes about being with a different species, a Wolf, but after deciding to stop reading it, I flipped through more of the pages and the wolf doesn’t even show up till chapter 4 and even then you don’t get to see him.

The first chapter was mostly seeing a nude humanoid pig girl naked and fantasizing about getting it on with a wolf and being caught by her room mate and all the while getting super long lengthy explanations of a simple ass concept of no cross breeding between species.

The art was decent nothing spectacular.

In this first-issue graphic novel, Italian writer and artist Mirka Andolfo presents an anthropomorphic fantasy world where relationships between species is forbidden, as are those between same gendered couples. Such things are, of course, UNNATURAL.

The main plot follows Leslie, a very round and juicy young pig girl who aches for the adventure of forbidden passion with the big, bad and dangerous wolf. Unfortunately for Leslie, the Reproductive Center has other plans, and has instead paired her with a respectable young pig. Meanwhile, Leslie's best friend and roommate Trish, is determined to help Leslie find happiness. Trish stumbles onto a mystery that leads her to believe Leslie's desires may not be as UNNATURAL as they seem.

At its core, this is a sweet but gritty tale, featuring stunning artwork and a protagonist with depth, feeling, and pop-off-the-page sex appeal. A story that is at once emotional, heartwarming, sexy, and suspenseful, UNNATURAL will leave readers both satisfied and ravenous for the next issue.

Thank you, Edelweiss and Image Comics, for the advanced e-copy of Unnatural, Volume 1.

This story is like Total Recall by way of Blacksad, and I've thoroughly enjoyed the ride so far. I'm still left asking several questions that were left unanswered by the last page of Unnatural, Volume 1, and I think that was Andolfo's intent. Well played, Mirka Andolfo.

What really struck me about the story is how it relates to our current society... and takes it in a much more dystopian direction. When a person turns 25 in Leslie's world, if they're not in a committed "natural" relationship (in other words, straight and within one's own species), they're contacted to attempt in creating a match. If the match fails or if the person remains single, they are heavily taxed. What's worse, if they are found guilty of being in an "unnatural" relationship, the first offense is a heavy fine. The second offense? Death penalty. It's just so bizarre, yet it really gives one pause to think.

The art is beautiful, rich, yet with this almost sinister undertone that just really draws in the reader. Yes, there are some scenes of a more graphic nature, but it's nothing new among adult graphic novels.

Considering the cliffhanger of an ending, I'm really looking forward to the next volume of Unnatural to see if Leslie and readers will get answers.

This is a delightful messy graphic novel. Erotic, weird, lots of unique story hooks, like a totalitarian government that forces animal species to intermarry.

There’s interesting aspects to the world building, but the plot falls apart in a few places. The art is pretty good, cartoony, which belies the creepy weirdness of the book’s tone. I’m undecided about whether I’ll pick up the next volume.
