There’s interesting aspects to the world building, but the plot falls apart in a few places. The art is pretty good, cartoony, which belies the creepy weirdness of the book’s tone. I’m undecided about whether I’ll pick up the next volume.

I really liked this graphic novel but it does feel like fury porn. However, the environment and society is an excellent commentary on issues of race (presented through the different species), as well as, illustrating the awful circumstances of a government that subscribes to homophobia. So in summary, don't discount it based on the cover or the racy depictions within the first few pages.

I'm so intrigued by this graphic novel/series, I can't even describe how badly I want the next one in my hands. The art style is beautiful and the story is relevant and captivating(?
For those that like warnings, there is a very cliffhangery ending to this volume.

I’ve just discovered that the Hoopla library app has a whole bunch of fairly recent comics on it, including some on my book club reading list. In perusing what they had to offer, I stumbled on Unnatural Volume 1: Awakening, which was featured on the app. I absolutely borrowed it based on the cover alone — checking that category off of my WWAC Reading Challenge — because Mirka Andolfo’s art is a gorgeous, seductive array of colour and imagery.

The book is about Leslie J. Blair, a hardworking pig girl who just wants to find love before she’s forced into a government-sanctioned same-species relationship when she comes of age. But steamy dreams involving a sexy wolf keep edging her toward breaking the law. This initially seemed like it could easily be described as erotic Zootopia, but there’s something far deeper and more insidious going on with those dreams…

OK, so I'll admit to picking up this because I wanted to try something new and the cover absolutely captivated me. And, I'll be completely honest that I wasn't sure if I was going to like it based on the synopsis. But I did. The art is absolutely stunning. I'd recommend Unnatural for that alone, but the story is super interesting too.

Some comics start a little slow, but not this one. The story from the very beginning was just excellent. I loved the mystery of it all and the political ideologies hit a little too close to reality to be ignored.

Leslie was an absolutely wonderful main character to follow, and honestly, all of the characters (side, bad guys, everyone) felt very fleshed out and real.

I cannot wait to continue this story with volume 2!
