Oh Durzo. I can see why he is one Brent Weeks' favorites. He is one of mine too. What a background story. Understanding this character really gave me something.

I devoured this little novella in less than a day. What I enjoyed most about it was that it answered questions I had had about Druze Blint from the Night Angel trilogy that were never answered in the trilogy itself. As always, Brent Weeks does an excellent job bringing more depth to his characters.

It was pretty neat to see glimpses of Durzo's long past. He was always the most interesting character for me. But this also takes that mystery out, and leaves us with a hard, empty shell of a man.

a nice little continuation (or prequel truly) which gives more insight into the world and characters we love. nothing groundbreaking. however a nice fun read.

HOWEVER; i own the trilogy and was in the market for this book, however with $24 CAD price tag for 130 pages in huge text, compared to the 700pg trilogy that go for around $12?? No thank you. I borrowed it from the library

After reading book 1 and 2, I was missing Durzo, so I absolutely loved reading this Novella! Blint is such a quirky character, and I was audibly laughing at some of his dialogue in this story. However, similar to what others have already said, I would read this novella after reading Book 1, because it does contain spoilers.

Would definitely recommend waiting until after book 3 to read this since it contains side plot spoiler and reveal from book 3 and a large spoiler from book 1 as well as many other references that you pick up on if you've finished Beyond the Shadows! :)

This novella is quite enjoyable and gave me plenty of aha moments when it referenced events I'd already read about in the main series! I also love what Weeks chose to cover in this novella!

This is about what you would expect from a prequel novella. There is no profound revelations or amazing plot here, but it is a good, short story revealing how Durzo Blint came to be, well... Durzo Blint.

Although this book takes place chronologically before The Way of Shadows, I would strongly recommend reading the other three books first. This definitely does not work as a standalone piece of fiction.

For how much I adore the Night Angel books, this one was a bit of a let down. It just seemed to be lacking the greater substance that I've come to expect from the Night Angel series. (And yes, I know it's a 136 page novella AND that 'substance' may not be the word that comes to mind with the Night Angel books.) I just expected more.
