Made me want to read the series again. Bit too much tiddies, but great magical assassin action.

Perfect Shadow gives us a little of the history of who is Durzo Blint and what makes him tick. Any reader of the Night Angel Trilogy will know that Durzo has some serious history and, among many other things, was possibly the finest assassin in Cenaria City. This is his tale.

Excellent, as a dip back into the world of the Night Angel Trilogy, this satisfies in so many ways. It's a prequel to the main story but reveals things best left until that tale has been read so don't read this first.

Three stars might be generous. Perfect Shadow was a bit disjointed and Night Angel was OK. Wanted more of Durzo Blunt.
I'm not big on short stories.

This was everything that the short story should be. Simple and satisfying. Leaving the reader to put together the pieces. Too many prequels touch on the story of a legend, but instead they destroy the legend's mystery. Could Weeks write a convincing and complete series about Durzo? Yes. Should he? That's the question that fans would debate. Weeks created enough of a history to provide lore to Durzo without cementing his history down, and this story keeps him a legend.

The writing style was also interesting. And a fun approach. It jumped between 1st and 3rd and interview style. Which at first sounds tedious, but the elusive and fleeting writing style matches the legend of the Perfect Shadow.

There are some writers who know how to grab your attention straight from the opening line through to the end, and Brent Weeks is one of them. His prose is excellent with the right touch of mysterious to keep making you want to continue. The switches between point of view are a difficult thing to pull off, but Brent Weeks seems to have figured out how to do it without completely throwing the reader off.

I've had his Night Angel trilogy on my shelf for some time now, so I decided I should read this short story before I dive into the trilogy. This is the origin story of Durzo Blint and has set things up perfectly for when I decide to start the trilogy, which is likely to be very soon.

Durzo was never my favorite, but I really missed this world and it was cool to know the details of his origin story!
