This is a great book. Examples, practical tools, but most of all, it gives us hope that someday our children will listen to us. That is if we listen in return.

I am always fascinated to learn new things, especially on subjects I have no experience with. This book offers solid advice on how to communicate with children (and others, too!).
I have two kids under 5 and I found this book to be so helpful in trying to get my toddler to express herself so that I could understand her, and how I could get her to understand my feelings as well. It's slow going (it's hard to change old, worn, easy habits) but I think the suggestions from this books are making a difference in our communication.
I am so grateful I discovered this book while my kids are still young, but I think it would be helpful to parents of any age children.

5/5 stars, full review to come! It’s a little scary to me that this book has been out since 1996 and yet not every parent uses it. This is one of the ultimate parenting books, period.

This started to feel redundant and also does not distinguish between 2 year olds and teenagers. May not be super helpful for me at this time. Also the audiobook leaves something to be desired, so many “fill in the blank” exercises that I wasn’t prepared for.

This book was wonderful. The best book money I've spent in a long time. It was tempting to dismiss it as trite or common sense, early on. But I gave it a chance, chewed on the ideas, and let them marinate. And in the end it showed me a completely different way of thinking about how we interact with our kids. This book doesn't offer silver bullets or guaranteed solutions. It does outline a much more satisfying and fulfilling way of thinking of children as people, and of communicating with them in that spirit. (And a lot of it applies to adults too!) I would absolutely recommend this book to any parent of any age. And I've added a couple more of these athors' books to my backlog in anticipation of future challenges.
