I wouldn’t call this an amazing book, but I also wouldn’t call it bad.

The writing was on point, it got a little too draggy sometimes, but overall it kept me interested. The story itself was intriguing. A lot of twists and turns, but it felt somewhat basic at times. A lot of the twists you could see coming. I’d recommend this is a standard read for most, it’s a good tale of murder with the serial killer vibe, with the actual killers being very in depth.

Now I'm going to start this review off by saying there should be so many trigger warnings attached to this book, there is torture, rape and abuse. Also the torture is dark, REALLY DARK. I know what you're probably thinking "yeah ok but how dark can it be" but seriously there are some vile descriptions in this book so seriously consider that before picking this up

Ok so, wow this book. I don't really go for police crime books as I just find them boring, you follow the clues, throw in a couple of red herrings but eventually get the killer - same story different characters. However in this book I was completely shocked, you get the story from both the police and the killers. You see inside their mindset and just how dark their views are (the killers that is, not the police). All the way through I was hooked trying to figure out how they would catch them, why those specific objects, what made them get like that etc.

This is definitely a stand out for me from all the other police crime books. It is an incredibly chilling read with some of the descriptions being so disgustingly vivid that in parts I did have to stop reading (there was a scene with some scissors and although nothing happened the thought of what could made me feel so sick).

We immediately get thrown into the action which just sets the scene for the book perfectly, it's dark, its fast paced and its incredibly tense. Normally books tend to drop off throughout the story but not this one, all the way through I was rushing to find out what happened and if everything would turn out ok. I loved the fact that there was an actual reason for the killing rather than the usual dead body murder case, here we had two killers that had a backstory and a motive and this added depth made the book so much better.

My only downside with this book was the ending (no spoilers don't worry), I just think things just went slightly over the top, nothing drastic but just teetering on the edge of too much. That pulled my rating down a bit but I still cannot recommend this book enough.

Looking at this book you think it's just going to be another boring murder book (which is why it sat on my shelves for 3 or 4 years) but honestly once you start reading you won't be able to stop. Its an amazing read and you will be hooked. I think if you can read dark torture and rape scenes then I do think this book will be a 5* for you because it is just written so well. I would definitely recommend this book if you're ok with the subject matter. Go pick it up now and you won't be disappointed!

I’d give this book a 3.5, 4 rounded up.

Nightmares start on a remote patch of land when two strange men appear out of no where and Nell’s life changes forever.

Valarie is a detective with all the cheesy TV characteristics…alcohol abuse, on/off again relationship with Nick with whom she is afraid to tell him that she loves him because of a secret she’s hiding in her past. And the obsessive traits that won’t let her quit on the hunt for the men who leave dead women tortured, raped, but also left wit clues that allow the police to follow their wake of terror.

That leaves Leon/Xander and his buddy Paulie. Paulie is the tag-a-long with Leon/Xander being the ring master of this whole circus. Why is he doing what he’s doing? What made him the way he is?

All three storylines are told throughout the book with all three coming together at the end. Some parts are a little slow, some a little hokey, but other parts are told well and make you cringe for how messed up people can really be.

I'm not usually one for detective novels but I decided to give this one a go. It had a very compelling story that had me hooked from the first chapter. I ended up reading this one all in one sitting because I liked the plot but i also feel as though at times it dragged a lot. The detective character was as cliche as they come with the typical traumatic past, drinking problems, and relationship trouble. I didn't seem to care too much about that aspect but I liked it when they focused more on the killer's perspective or the victim's perspective. I'm not sure if I will check out more from the series but this was pretty good.

YIKES! I couldn't put this down! So many dead people... rather graphic... Haven't read a good murder and mayhem novel in a while...
