I never read or saw the movie DUFF so this review is from a noob to this author's writing. You didn't need to know the previous book to read this one FWIW. I enjoyed this book as a light read, sort of a throw back to the simple YA romance that I used to read growing up. I needed a mental break and this was nice for that.
Great read for teens, light on anything physically romantic, but plenty of witty banter and general sweetness.

This was OK. The lying was a little extreme but yeah... I didn't really connect with anyone. It wasn't bad but wasn't all that good. I prefer The Duff over this.

It was good. It wasn't great but it wasn't bad either. As someone who adored the D.U.F.F I was extremely excited when I found out about this book. I love Keplinger's writing style and the honesty of the character's tone is relatable. However, Sonny's story didn't seem all that interesting. Yes, it had the gooey love story that we'd expect and of course, the troublesome back story to add some drama but other than that, I found the story line bland. I dragged on reading it because I do enjoy the way Keplinger writes, I just didn't particularly enjoy what she wrote for this book. I'm sure the next one will be better.

“Paper cuts are like battle scars for the academic...I, on the other hand, am best friends with Wikipedia.”
Lying out Loud is the Companion novel to THE DUFF a.k.a two side characters in this book were the main characters in that one.
Just like with the Duff I had some problems with this one. The main problem I had with this one was how the lying just got worse and worse the longer things were going on. Now having said that I did like the friendship that Sonny had with her bestfriend and the guy that she was interested in.
I loved the chat aspect of it and just wished it was a little different so that everyone knew the truth. Also can we just talk about how good of a friend Amy is, and also her parents were so kind as well. This is the type of family we need more of, and I hope that teenagers who are struggling with their parents in the same way that Sonny was have a support system like this one.
“Sometimes people surprise you, if you let them.”
Overall I'm still a little iffy on this book, just because I don't want to glorify lying to this extreme. Yes things were a little different by the end I was so glad to see that (and it helped me be able to give this book three stars). One other I want to mention is how real this book felt when it came to talking about colleges and the struggle that most kids have that know they can't rely on their parents for financial help for it. So few books actually deal with that, and it was nice to see that for a change in a YA book.

I liked it, but not as much as The Duff?
It's the kind of situation that the sequel is never as good as the first one. But worth a read!
But make sure you read The Duff first otherwise you won't get it

I really enjoyed reading this just like I did with The Duff. It got a half star more as the characters felt more real, and Sonny was a funny protagonist.
Sonny's best friend is Amy Rush, who is the younger sister of Wesley Rush, a main character in The Duff. This is set a couple of years after, when Sonny and Amy are seniors at Hamilton High and Bianca and Wesley are at college together. Wesley and Bianca appear a couple of times in the book, with Wesley giving some advice to Sonny and it was really cool reading about them again.
Throughout the novel, Sonny does lie a lot (though understandably so, and hence the title), and in the end this gets her into a lot of troubles. The character development and growth of not only Sonny but also Amy, Ryder and even her dad was great to see.
By the end, everything is wrapped up nicely. Sonny has family problems, friendship problems, problems about her future and with Ryder and they are all resolved. Both this book and The Duff were different high school stories, in that it didn't really focus on high school and more on real life morals.
Overall, another quick, fun read from Keplinger and a great addition to the Hamilton High books.

My opinion
Lying out Loud was the third book I have read by Kody Keplinger. I loved the Duff a lot and the synopsis of this one sounded funny. I read this book in one sitting, mostly because it was pretty short, but it was also a lot of fun.
The book is told from the POV of Sonny, who is super sarcastic and super funny, which made me like her. But she can also be imnensly frustrating. I mean, it already gets clear from the title that lying plays a big role in this book, but, especially in the end, the lies got less and less necessary and I honestly just wanted to shake some sense into Sonny.
Amy, the best friend, got a lot more likeable in the end. I mean, she was always nice, but that was kinda the problem. But, in general, I liked her friendship with Sonny.
Ryder, our love interest, was kinda meh. I mean he was nice enough, but I also wouldn’t have minded much if he hadn’t been there, which is never good with a love interest.
I have to admit that the part I loved most about the book were Wesley and Bianca. They might not have had a big part to play, but they were super adorable and made me wanna reread the Duff.
In conlcusion
A cute, sometimes funny highschool love/friendship story for in between.
