While I understand the concept of exploring a world without women and what would happen with that loss (it's not the first time this idea has been explored), I didn't fully understand where this novel was going with it all. Using this concept as a plot device but not having some reason or explanation for the horrible things that happen makes it all feel cheap. And it didn't go anywhere. There wasn't a reason why Evie was the catalyst of this event. It seemed like it was all just some horrible, let's all hurt one another until we reach a point where we finally realise that's not good and now we can change because we've learnt our lesson, sort of situation. Which is frankly...boring.
Not to mention it kind of bugs me that this was written by two men. Maybe if one of them had cowritten this with a woman, or even if this book also had a woman author I'd feel differently. As it is I just don't like the fact that this novel which essentially had women choose between a safer world or men, was written by men.

This book was ok and I liked it but it was long. I felt it could have been shorter. There was also a lot of characters to keep track of and I couldn’t remember what some were supposed to be doing or who they really were. I liked the fox, basically a spirit guide. It was an ok book some things were left half answered which was annoying but I guess you are supposed to make your own conclusions.

Overall, I thought "Sleep Beauties" was an entertaining read, and very smartly offered provocative commentary on the inequalities and injustices between genders, and to a lesser extent, race. Stephen King knows how to spin a story into completely different entities that never gets old even though the average fan and consistent reader can spot the same motifs and themes. I feel that Owen King brought the current social complexities to this novel that made it really engaging. The issue of the novel was the over-abundance of characters that took away from the element of backstory that sets off Stephen's better novels. None of the characters are exactly likeable, which I find refreshing because I think it paints a more realistic picture of how humanity might be if it ever had to face a world-wild apocalyptic situation. It also shows how humanity can worsen a situation making rash and irrational decisions.
