Not as good as the first book in the series.  A lot of her characters are really sad.  Fire chief Fitz falls for out of owner Antoine.  Light enemies to lovers.

Loved this

I just loved this! So much personal angst for these gorgeous men.

As is usual for EM Lindsey, the disability rep was phenomenal. One MC, Fitz, has chronic pain from burns. Three secondary characters are Blind. Another secondary character has progressive MS.

I also loved getting glimpses of Antoine's brother, Marcel from Temptations and seeing that relationship from Antoine's POV.

In this you'll find:
✨MM romance with spice
✨Gay MCs
✨Fire Chief with chronic pain + burns from a fire as a teenager
✨ Successful consultant searching for a feeling of home & rebuilding his relationship with his twin
✨Antagonism at first sight
✨Hurt/comfort
✨Teen badly injured in a fire
✨Blind secondary characters with congenital and adult onset blindness
✨Secondary character with progressive MS
✨Car crash
✨Getting hit by a car
✨Choking on food
✨Near drowning
✨Sexual assault of a minor
✨ Savannah, GA setting
✨A HEA

This was a bit of a let-down following the first book. The relationship was based almost entirely on melodrama to the point of being nonsensical at times. Hell, I was way more interested in whatever was going on with Owen and his teenage angst than Antoine and Fitz. This entry also suffered from the same issue with too many side characters, and there was a significant number of typos and other editing errors.

3 stars. I don’t fully know how to feel about this one. On one hand, I love E.M Lindsey and their ability to write emotionally gripping love stories. On the other hand, this particular couple’s story felt rushed to me. There were some very sweet moments in here but there were also things that bothered me. Like mention of SA against a minor that I felt was 1) rushed and 2) handled a little poorly. Not EML’s best work but it was a fine book.

I put off reading this for a while (by no fault of the book) so it took me a while to get the names back in order. There are quite a lot of them so it can be more than a bit disorienting. They eventually did fall in line though and I was able to enjoy myself.

I thought it was a very sweet story and while I wouldn’t consider it enemies to lovers (thank god!), I do think it’s a very contentious romance, which I enjoyed.  They “brought out the worst” in each other and yet still found something worth loving which I think was beyond precious. Not all love stories have to fit the same mold and I think Lindsey is great at challenging those typical constructs. I’m looking forward to reading more by them.

Book two of this series is definitely more angst filled, in my opinion. Lots of hate-lust that grows into something more but it is quite a ride to get there.

Fitz is the firefighter chief who has this weird combination of being part of the community and also holding most people at arms length. His friendships with his lifelong friends and his relationship with his sister and nephew are so complex and there is so much love, but dang if love is not hard for this man.

Antoine is the hot shot from San Fran who has been hired to update the town. Fans of the Irons and Works spinoff trilogy Breaking the Rules will recognize him as the twin brother of Marcel. And oh my goodness I lvoe seeing this side of the man who just wants a home and accidentally finds it.

I didn’t realize how much it actually hurts me to read the kind of hate-lust romances that turn into something sweet, but this one was harder for me to get through. Fitz really upset me with how he treated Antoine and while the sweetness finally made it. It’s a journey to get there.

Still loved this book, still rate it highly, this one just wasn’t as low angst as the first and it kind of threw me a bit. But their HEA is well worth waiting for.
