I love Candice Millard’s works and her writing. Her copious research is evident throughout this book.
The lives of these men though. Holy poop. They were so arrogant and unlikable! It’s unfair to judge them by today’s standards, but that doesn’t make it easier to read…

A fine book, but like many history books, I don't think I retained a bunch.

Fascinating story of the English explorer and writer Richard Burton, his translations and writing, and ultimately his wife.

What a fascinating book. History but with all its flaws exposed. This was really great. Enjoyed very much!

Beautifully written and great characters. Love the descriptions of adventure and difficulty and perseverence. Maps were also very helpful.

This was an entertaining read about the search for the source of the Nile. The rivalry between the two explorers added drama to the narrative. My favorite parts were the direct quotes from everyone's letters and the reader did an excellent job conveying the attitudes of the explorers and I loved his British accent.
