A book about vampires and ghost dogs. It couldn’t live up to the expectations.

I loved this book. I got to read it as a part of my teen librarian group's Tournament of Books, and for those interested, here's the link to the review of it, pitted again another excellent YA novel, The Extraordinaries by one of my personal favorite authors, TJ Klune. (Some spoilers for both books in the discussion.)

Ok, so this one is a little hard for me to review.

Elatsoe had moments that completely pulled me in. I was hooked and invested in where the story was going. But there were other times when it felt like the pacing slowed way down, and I struggled to stay engaged.

Some of Elatsoe’s dialogue felt a bit forced or unnecessary, which pulled me out of the story here and there. But overall? I enjoyed the storyline. The blend of mystery, Indigenous culture, and supernatural elements was unique, and I’m glad I picked it up.

Read if you like:
Contemporary fantasy with supernatural vibes
Strong family bonds
Indigenous folklore and representation
A slow-burn mystery

I really enjoyed this teen mystery thriller filled with ghost dogs and so many stories. Myths and legends from multiple cosmologies intertwine in a vivid depiction of Americana past and present. Legacies of colonisation, racism, and endurance fill these pages and the central relationships are sweet and filled with love.
