One of the greatest books ever written.

I can't believe it took me 43 years to get around to reading this book. I wish I read it when I was 12.

an authentic account of slavery, promoted by the abolitionists to raise awareness about the everyday brutality faced by slaves in the South. Douglass explores the importance of education under an oppressive system, exposes the hypocrisy of Christian slaveholders, and reveals the dehumanizing effects of slavery on both the slaves and their masters. emotive and insightful 👍

An very historically important memoir, and a quick read. Douglass has a wonderful command of language. However, I find the narration a bit stilted at times.

One of those classic historical documents which every American should read. Only read excerpts in highschool, finally read the whole thing. Wow. I had no idea. What a brilliant man was Frederick Douglas. You never really think about northern slavery much, but it was here too....

2nd reading: This book...one of the most powerful indictments of racism I've read. Of course this should be read in high schools and colleges...but also in churches. It makes clear the complicity of the Christian Church in the support and perpetuation of slavery, and this needs to (finally) be acknowledged universally, and apologized for along with a commitment for restitution.

Powerful! I am so glad I finally got around to reading this remarkable story of resilience, perseverance, and survival. This narrative should be required reading.

The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is be one of the most influential memoirs in U.S. history. Surprisingly, even in 2019, it is short and easy to read and understand. Recommended!
