another good post-apocalyptic book - seems like it's begging for a sequal though

It is probably a great book for 4th-6th graders, but reading it as an adult made me want a trilogy at least. This is a huge universe that got crammed into a couple hundred pages. So characters are generic and the plot, once it gets moving, is filled with deus ex machina. I liked the universe. Liked the idea. Just way too short for my taste. Maybe the author should revisit.

SpoilerAnd what the heck!?!? Bully is his dad??? Where did that come from, and why was it necessary to put in the last few pages of the book? Dumb!

The ending is majorly rushed and it feels underdeveloped at times. Think a lot more could have been made of the relationships and warring between latches I relation to his role/history.

In a future where slums of 'normals' surround the city of Eden, a banished young boy (Spaz) must travel across latches to see his sister Bean, who is dying of leukemia. His epilepsy prevents him from engaging in the hobby of the day - plugging needles into your brain and experiencing a fantasy world. He is accompanied by Ryter, possessor of the last book in the universe, a small boy known as Little Face, and meets Lanaya a genetically improved ('proov') girl from the city of Eden. If you like - The Giver by Lowry, Feed by MT Anderson.

Hi, yes, I'd like to trade all the Ready Player One nonsense for this simple post-civilization children's book, please and thank you. Pop culture references that aren't overblown or ham-fisted? Check. Female characters that aren't there just for the wish-fulfillment of the male protagonist? K. A story that at least vaguely makes sense? Yup.

Like, if you want your kids to watch Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, but they're not old enough for Beyond Thunderdome, this is what you hand them til they are.
