It was alright to pass the time, but there was absolutely nothing going on in the story. Typical characters, typical happenings, frustratingly boring last half and ending. That's about it.

Wouldn’t have picked this one, book group pick. But the wiring was funny and smart. Very disappointed by the ending. I had higher hopes for Eugenia. However this was probably a more realistic ending . Still love a strong heroine and in the end she was but not strong enough to overcome. Alas :

This could have been titled The Awakening as the poor Eugenie loses her innocence and learns about the real world. I absolutely love the details in 19th century novels - at times you feel smothered by them, but it is such a refreshing change from the sparse prose of contemporary lit, that I feel rejuvenated!

This is often described as the first great novel Balzac wrote and it is still much loved and much read.
I was hoping that I would love Balzac – Zola is an all-time favourite of mine and Balzac’s Human Comedy was the inspiration for his Rougon MacQuart series, which in my opinion is unmatched for its virtuosity and innovation.
Yet beside Zola seems more limited, less exciting, even claustrophobic. So although there was much to admire in this sombre portrait of a hopelessly blighted life and I can see why so many admire it, it did not set me alight. This is my third Balzac, I think I’ll leave it at that.
