They Came from the Ocean by Boris Bačić

There were a few oddities in the writing that bothered me quite a bit. Like the MC responding "coldly" even to people she liked. After a while I couldn't not see it, and I lost the desire to continue.

SEALAB sits 5,023 feet below the ocean’s surface off the coast of New Zealand, and their secondary base is even deeper - 8,142 feet below. Raymond was used to the pressure, literally, of fixing deep sea drills at SEALAB, that is until one day he discovered something below the surface, and after that? No one heard from him. Raymond has been missing for more than a day now, and he only had 8 hours of oxygen in his tank. How then did he send a distress signal at 11,000 feet below the surface, 20 hours later? Ellie, and a few of her coworkers volunteer to go find Raymond, and whatever else may be lurking below.

Survival horror is my absolute favorite sub-genre of horror, and I can’t get enough of deep sea or space type horror. Are a lot of them the same? Yes! But just how all of Disturbed’s music sounds the same, I still love it. They Came From the Ocean is your typical deep sea horror novel, blending claustrophobia, thalassophobia, and impending doom all together. I liked the connection Bacic made the reader feel to Ellie, letting you get to know the MC. While it did take a little bit for the deep sea rescue to begin, I wasn’t left bored with the character backstory/growth. They Came From the Ocean is a definite must read for any survival horror junkie!

This is an ocean horror/sci fi story with some mermaid-like creatures. It was an okay read! Something about it was a little lacking, but I enjoyed it for the most part. I think it also reminded me of a couple other books that did it better, which isn’t exactly the books fault but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Audiobook. Book had quite a few audio mistakes..
overall super creepy and had definite subnautica feels. Which bothered me at first and then I enjoyed it quite a bit. Simple but scary.

It's obvious from fairly early on that this is definitely not a 'good' book but I really love underwater horror so I thought that for me at least it could turn out to be decent. Unfortunately it kind of just kept getting worse as it went. The writing feels incredibly stilted and the audio narrator doesn't help but showing absolutely no emotion at all while reading. The pacing is awful and the characters are all incredibly two dimensional. Fairly sexist and a little bit homophobic towards the end just for funsies I guess. Honestly wouldn't have even finished it but at least it's short if nothing else.

Great under tale of the creepy kind!  I won’t give it away but will say its a great “monster”!  Hoping the author was setting up for a second book so we can see more of the murderous monsters. If you like sea horror I am betting you will like this one.

This was my first book by this author and now I’m excited to check out more books! I was looking for a good horror/thriller author.
I did not realize i had such a bad fear of the sea and the ocean. Some of the descriptions of the MC in certain situations made me feel claustrophobic and panicked myself. I had to stop and take deep breaths and feel relieved i was not stuck 11000 feet under the damn ocean, surrounded by impenetrable darkness. Thank all the Gods in the heavens.
Spoilerdaaaaaaaaamn that betrayal though???? And the fact that he had a girlfriend?? I liked you Trevor you POS. And Ellie never finds out about the gf! idk, i felt bad that he died too, because the pain of that betrayal was pointless.
I really thought Sasha and Ellie would make it out alive, girl power and all that.

I don't normally write reviews because I'm bad at synthesizing my feelings but I feel compelled.

I don't think this author knows what the word complacent means and every characters either nods or smiles complacently or has a complacent look on their face when that is clearly not the emotion happening. That and the use of the word gait to mean "jog" really got to me.

Overall, I like deep sea horror and the premise was fun even if the characters were kind of stilted and always nodding complacently.
