Some collected cases of a "rogue lawyer." He doesn't have an office or work for a firm. I didn't like this as well as some of his others.

Well, this is disappointing. I thought John Grisham was a "safe" author. In other words, pick any one of his books for a good read with great storytelling. So I picked two books. The first was the "Reckoning" with its strange "two books in one" structure. This one is part screed on the justice system (I already know its faults first hand) and part short stories. I *hate* short stories. The structure of this book is odd too. At first it seemed like each "Part" would be its own story, but then one short story spanned multiple "Parts". Plus everybody in the entire book is a sleaze-ball. Not my cup of tea. So I'm not even going to submit it to Megan's criteria for a good thriller!

Finally I liked a Grisham thriller again. I got a glimpse of the Grisham who wrote books like A Time to Kill, Pelican Brief and other thrilling legal thrillers. Hoping for a complete comeback of my favorite legal thriller writer!

I really enjoyed the writing of this book; however, the book ended abruptly and felt that the author should have closed some of the gaps that were left at the end.

Definitely not his finest. Too many storylines and not enough intrigue.

I give it three stars for being entertaining enough to finish reading it. But it feels somewhat rushed. There are better books by Grisham.

If half stars were allowed, then it would have earned 2 1/2 (maybe). The section on warrior cops was very pertinent and asks some very important questions that need to be discussed in our society. However, this self-justifying, sanctimonious jerk of a character is the exact vehicle to drive opinion in the wrong direction. I don't think Grisham is an automatic read for me anymore.

Different style of writing for John Grisham, but I really enjoyed reading it. The perspective from a lawyer who defends people who others wouldn't. Definitely interesting. The personal story element also provided a good balance to the book. A refreshing piece of work. Definitely a good read.
