Desires of the Dead by Kimberly Derting

Violet is probably the luckiest fictional character I've read about; I mean somehow the dead always find her. What more could a girl ask for? Oh yeah, being dragged into cases of the dead people she finds AND continually being wanted dead by the killers who killed the dead people she found. What a life... (Did you catch my sarcasm there?)

I thought the plot of this story was pretty good. Nothing too amazing, but it kept me entertained. There were definitely some predictable parts, but Kimberly Derting makes up for that in the pace of the book. It was set at a steady pace and kept me interested until the end. I've come to really love her writing because it flows incredibly well.

As for the characters... Violet was still your average teenage girl that can sense the dead, but Jay was amazing. His role in the book was wonderful and I've grown to really love him. Jay was so phenomenally swoon-worthy and I can't wait to see more of him in future books! Maybe even a novella or book in his point of view...

I have on issue with this book though. I didn't feel very "on the edge of my seat" during the times I should have. It was very disappointing because I love Kimberly Derting's writing and these events fell flat for me.

Overall I liked Desires of the Dead, but I didn't love it.

2.5 stars. Desires of the Dead was not nearly as good as The Body Finder. I thought The Body Finder was a great stand-alone book, and I sort of wished it had stayed that way

There were a couple of edge of your seat moments in this one, but most of the time I felt like Violet was an idiot. She suddenly feels as though she can't talk to anyone and starts hiding everything, and the reasoning behind it is just flimsy to me. Where was the confident Violet? She seemed like a different person in this book.

I thought the romance between Violet and Jay in the Body Finder was sweet, the way they realized that they felt more than just friendship for each other. However, in this book we are assaulted with their hormones. Jay is trying to hold off on having sex, but Violet keeps pressuring him into it. This went on for half of the book until they finally give in and have sex, which was not surprising considering the situations they kept putting themselves in.

Violet is already conflicted and confused about the change in their relationship, and having sex is only something that will complicate it more. She is just so immature in this book. And to prove my point, she completely overreacts when Jay doesn't believe something that she believes, and thinks that their whole relationship is over because of it. She goes all to pieces and can't handle going to school or anything. She holes up in her room for two days! I mean really if she can't handle this tiny little bump in a relationship, then she really shouldn't add sex into the mix.

Overall, I felt the book was pretty predictable. There was no real mystery about who did anything, except for who killed the little boy at the beginning of the book, and that was because the book wasn't about that murder. It was just thrown in there to introduce Violet to the profiler, who she obviously will be working with from now on in the rest of the series. I was disappointed in this book and have decided not to continue on with this series.

Similar to THE BODY FINDER, I initially had a hard time immersing myself in DESIRES OF THE DEAD. There is something about Kimberly Derting’s writing that throws me off. What it is, I can’t put my finger on it. The novel is told in third person perspective, but I don’t think that would be the reason why. Derting still manages to do a fantastic job to get us into the head of Violet. I haven’t heard anyone else comment her writing style so maybe it’s just me. I had a hard time getting into the story which made it difficult for me to like the book.

Another obstacle that made the first third of the book such a challenge was the secondary characters. Oh my God. Seriously, Chelsea annoys me so much. Violet keeps defending her saying that’s really not how she acts and that’s really not her character when they’re alone, but it’s tough to get over it. Sure she has her bright moments, but it was really annoying to read her constantly flaunting herself to get Mike’s attention. Geez. It came off as needy and desperate and I really had to stop myself from constantly rolling my eyes.

Then there’s the introduction of new character Rafe. I definitely feel like Derting is setting up a love triangle for the books to come. Rafe is okay, I guess, but the fact that he refuses to tell Violet anything about himself no matter how many times he comes up in the book makes him that mysterious guy. And of course, mysterious guy will always end up part of a love triangle (ugh)… Especially since there seems to be a spark between him and Violet every single time they touch. Every. Single. Time. If that’s not a blatant sign, I don’t know what is.

As for the actual plot of the novel, it can basically be summed up in four words: Violet has a stalker. While there is a bit of body finding throughout the book, it ends up being a lot secondary to the point that Violet’s secret may be in danger. Mystery of who the stalker is made you think it was predictable, but Derting came around and made a twist to it. Still, once the mystery started to roll, I wanted to know how Derting would unfold it. Overall, the mystery wasn’t as strong as the first book especially since it was more about Violet than body finding….

Jay/Violet is cute and that is one of the reasons why I kept going especially in the second half of the book…. But if I hear one more time about how hot Jay is and how sick Violet is of seeing all the girls draping themselves over him….. Geez, I know I shouldn’t be one to judge since I am a little superficial myself (I mean, I appreciate good looking men) but I don’t necessarily want to read about it… It gets tiring all the time. It started to feel repetitive and I just wanted to say, get on with the story already.

I wasn’t a big fan of THE BODY FINDER to begin with. I thought it was an okay book and DESIRES OF THE DEAD was an okay sequel. If you are a big fan of the book, then you’ll probably enjoy it a lot more than I will. While the book turned out a lot better than I thought it would, I doubt I will continue on with the series.

Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Another disappointing sequel. Last book was mystery with a little romance and this book was romance with some random bits of mystery in it. It is very gushy. And what is with her Bella attitude? Why is it attractive for girls to hate parties? That doesn't make them cool and mysterious, it makes them obnoxious and antisocial. Oh and if you and your very serious boyfriend have a little disagreement, YOU DID NOT BREAK UP! So I really doubt you need to miss school for it. The mystery it did have was incoherent. It jumped from one story line to another. Sara Priest and Rafe had absolutely no purpose in the story. I just did not like this, and I will not read the next book if it comes out.

Overall: 2 stars

Cover is pretty. Her publisher has a good cover artist.

I really did not like this book as much as the first one. I felt nothing really happened and I saw it all coming.

I loved it. It was just as good as the first, if not better. Jay and Violet take their relationship to the next level as Violet decide on what to do with her abilities of finding dead bodies and the FBI or an agency like the FBI have interest in her and her special powers. i can't wait for the next one.

Ending was predictable and I saw the big plot twist coming. They're trying to set up Violet with Rafe even though her relationship with Jay is fine. It was really good at points, but at other times it went soooooo slowly.
