This is the first book I've read in ages that I couldn't put down for the need to know what happened.

Strange one this. Despite being a fan of all things Italian, and despite The Whisperer apparently being hugely successful in Europe, I was unaware of both this book and the author until a friend's recommendation. It is advertised as a 'literary' thriller which sometimes means no plot, but it kept me intrigued to the end. There is a labyrinthine plot involving multiple abductions, and murders, and a team of suitably damaged experts attempting to solve the crimes which appear to be the work of a fiendishly clever serial killer. I felt it was not always plausible and the language is at times, not exactly stilted, but a little cold, a little 'off'. Whether this is the Carrisi's style or a result of the translation, I don't know but it adds a sense of strangeness to the novel which is accentuated by the lack of a sense of place; it is hard to determine where the action is taking place. Carrisi is Italian but the book does not feel Italian, nor do the characters have Italian names. If anything, it feels Scandinavian.

I set this aside to read on a trip to Rome, which is perhaps where my slight unease comes from - but it is not necessarily a bad thing. I will pick up another Carrisi, perhaps the one with Rome in the title - that should be Italian, right?

Evidentemente una opera prima, che racconta una storia di omicidi seriali. La scrittura è buona, e i casi interessanti, i personaggi abbastanza ben costruiti, però alla fine del libro restano un po' troppe pistole cariche che l'autore si è dimenticato di far sparare, troppi spunti irrisolti insomma, e troppi vicoli ciechi della narrazione.

Ma première excursion avec Donato Carrisi, le fameux maître du thriller italien, qui ne sera pas la dernière. Un thriller bien malin, machiavélique qui prend tout un tourbillon d’efficacité, de suspense et de rythme. À travers la trame qui peut paraître complexe, Carrisi enfile son habit de criminologue et nous amène à disséquer l’esprit d’un tueur dans toute sa dégénérescence. Cela met en lumière un détour très apprécié du roman, pour bien doser la tension et repartir de plus belle dans la macabre aventure. Si j’ai constaté quelques défauts au niveau de la caractérisation des personnages, particulièrement de Mia, je n’en tiendrai pas rigueur cette fois, en sachant que c’est un premier roman et que les prochains tomes s’annoncent plus développé à ce sujet. Avec une histoire qui nous pousse à analyser les moindres recoins de l’âme sombre d’un tueur en série, avec une écriture bien soignée et méthodique et ce malgré une fin un peu fantaisiste, Donato Carrisi maîtrise l’art de buildup le momentum du récit qu’il entreprend. Le talent de Carrisi n’est pas quelque chose qu’on devrait chuchoter à autrui, bien au contraire. Une belle réussite!

Un thriller avec un forme assez différente du “thriller” typique.

Les enquêteurs nous sont étrangers et éloignés sans être antipathiques. Ils auraient probablement gagner à nous être plus sympathiques par contre.
L’agente Mila Vasquez est celle que l’on suit la majorité du temps et elle semble mystérieusement pleine de secrets.

L’enquête est vraiment complexe et le rythme est alterné par différentes sections dont on ne comprend pas le sens avant la fin quoiqu’elles sont tout de même intéressantes et agréables à lire.
Le sens du “punch” est très répétitif à la fin de chaque chapitre.
L’enquête est vraiment complexe et les processus d’investigation, de recherche, d’analyse des preuves et des lieux d’intérêt sont vraiment bien expliqués et intéressants.
Le bémol c’est que les liens fait par les enquêteurs deviennent de moins en moins abordables par le lecteur (ou juste par moi) au fur et à mesure de l’avancement de l’enquête.
Les différents revirements sont malgré tout surprenants (lorsqu’on les comprend) et il y en a beaucoup et jusqu’à la toute fin.


La notice de l’auteure à la fin du livre est vraiment pertinente.

Malgré 2 moments profondément incohérents, une rivalité féminine dérangeante (même si elle finit par avoir une explication) et le délai extrême avant d’avoir un peu de profondeur dans les personnages, c’est sans contredit mon roman policier préféré à ce jour. Je ne sais pas si c’est juste parce que je n’explore pas vraiment ce genre, mais je n’ai presque rien deviné. Je suivais l’auteur avidement, curieuse de savoir où il allait m’amener. Et chaque fois qu’on semblait découvrir un coupable, ce n’était pas tout à fait lui. Du bonbon!

Je suis contente d'enfin vous parler d'un de mes auteurs de romans policiers préférés, l'italien Donato Carrisi, l'auteur entre autres de la saga du Chuchoteur, autrement appelé le cycle de Mila Vasquez. Il a plusieurs autres sagas criminelles dont je vous parlerai.
Carrisi est un auteur prolifique, sortant un roman par an, ainsi que des scénarios télévisuels et réalisant ses propres adaptations au cinéma. Il est aussi atypique en ce qu'il est avant tout un juriste, ayant écrit une thèse sur un tueur en série italien. Carrisi c'est donc un vrai, un spécialiste, presque un criminologue avant d'être auteur.
La saga du Chuchoteur débute en 2009 avec Il Suggeritore, paru en français chez calmann Levy dans une traduction d'Anaïs Bokobza, comme tous ses autres romans. Suivent L'Écorchée (L'ipotesi del male), L'Égarée (L'uomo del labirinto) et Le jeu du Chuchoteur (Il gioco del Suggeritore) en 2018, dernier de cette saga pour le moment. Ce cycle a remporté plusieurs prix dont le prix du polar européen SNCF et prix des lecteurs du livre de poche en 2011 pour le premier tome.
L'écriture de Donato Carrisi est une écriture très fluide, pleine de rebondissements. Il prend plaisir à mener le lecteur en bateau plusieurs fois au cours d'un même roman et les twists s'enchaînent. Le Chuchoteur et ses suites sont des page turners, impossibles à lâcher avant la dernière page. Les sujets sont glauques sans êtres graphiques et l'héroïne principale est bien écrite, sans clichés ni trop de male gaze. C'est par le Chuchoteur que j'ai découvert Carrisi et j'achète désormais chaque automne mon nouveau polar de cet auteur, comme un rituel.

Σε κανένα από τα άνωθεν σενάρια ο αναγνώστης αστυνομικού δεν θα καταφέρει να απολαύσει αυτό το βιβλίο γιατί, με απλά λόγια, ο "Υποβολέας" είναι ένα ΑΠΑΡΑΔΕΚΤΟ αστυνομικό βιβλίο.

Ο ιατροδικαστής βγάζει πόρισμα νεκροψίας χωρίς να έχει καν πτώματα στα χέρια του για... να κάνει νεκροψία, μόνο από ένα κομμένο μπράτσο καταλήγει στο συμπέρασμα ότι τα θύματα είναι νεκρά και ότι μάλιστα αιτία θανάτου ήταν ο ακρωτηριασμός.

Δεν υπάρχει σε όλο το βιβλίο ίχνος αστυνομικής έρευνας, μόνο ανυπόστατες θεωρίες και σπασμωδικές κινήσεις βασισμένες στο "αστυνομικό δαιμόνιο", για τις οποίες στην πραγματική ζωή κόσμος θα έχανε τη δουλειά του.

Ανακαλύπτουν στοιχεία ζωτικής σημασίας χάρη στις τηλεπαθητικές ικανότητες ενός μέντιουμ. Και στην ύπνωση.

Υπάρχουν περισσότερες από μία αναληθοφάνειες που είναι το λιγότερο αστείες. Όπως το ανθρώπινο περίγραμμα στον τοίχο που έχει καλυφθεί από αίμα ή το γεγονός ότι κάποιος κατάφερε να αυτοκτονήσει... δαγκώνοντας τους καρπούς του. Και δεν θέλω καν να μπω στο κομμάτι των οπτικοακουστικών ψευδαισθήσεων και του πώς λειτουργούν. Spoiler alert: δεν λειτουργούν όπως νομίζει ο συγγραφέας.

Το μυστήριο βασίζεται σε συμπτώσεις. Σε φάση, περνάει ο serial killer με το αμάξι του, εντελώς τυχαία μαζεύει το πλουσιόπαιδο, το πάει στην παράγκα του, του φέρνει κάποιον να σκοτώσει και εντελώς τυχαία το πλουσιόπαιδο αποδεικνύεται ότι έχει κι αυτό φλέβα serial killer. Ή ο Α και ο Β γνωρίζονταν και, όσο ψάχναμε τον Α πέσαμε πάνω στον Β ο οποίος δεν μας κίνησε υποψίες, αλλά τώρα ερευνώντας μια άσχετη υπόθεση και βρίσκοντας ένα άσχετο στοιχείο θυμηθήκαμε εντελώς τυχαία και βολικά ότι αυτό το στοιχείο κολλάει με τον Β, άρα ο Β είναι αυτός που ψάχνουμε.

Τέλος, η λύση του μυστηρίου αφήνει πάρα πολλά αναπάντητα ερωτήματα, τα βασικότερα από τα οποία είναι: πώς ήξερε ο υποβολέας όλα όσα ήξερε, πότε συνάντησε αυτούς που συνάντησε, ποιο ήταν το κίνητρό του για να τα κάνει όλα αυτά, τι ρόλο ακριβώς βάραγε η Μίλα στη φαντασίωσή του κτλ κτλ.

Σαν να μην έφταναν όλα αυτά, ο συγγραφέας αλλάζει διαρκώς οπτικές γωνίες και χρόνους, ακόμη και σε σημεία όπου δεν θα έπρεπε. Το generic περιβάλλον στο οποίο διαδραματίζεται η ιστορία δεν μου άρεσε, θα προτιμούσα μακράν κάτι πιο συγκεκριμένο, κάτι το οποίο θα μπορούσα να οραματιστώ πώς μοιάζει και που θα με βοηθούσε να μπω μέσα στην ιστορία.

Τα μοναδικά ελαφρυντικά που βρίσκω στο βιβλίο είναι η πραγματικά πολύ αξιόλογη μετάφρασή του και το πόσο γρήγορα διαβάστηκε. Ίσως αν δεν είχα προετοιμαστεί να διαβάσω ένα αστυνομικό βιβλίο, να μην ήταν τέτοια η απογοήτευσή μου. Αλλά αυτό περίμενα και αυτό που έλαβα δεν ήταν αστυνομικό, ήταν ρυζόγαλο. Ωραίο το ρυζόγαλο, δεν λέω - ή, τέλος πάντων, μπορεί να είναι ωραίο άμα το φτιάξει κάποιος που ξέρει από ρυζόγαλα - αλλά εγώ ήθελα αστυνομικό.

Overall this was a gripping, if a little messy, psychological thriller that’s not for the faint hearted.

Six severed left arms are found buried in a circle in a forest glen. Those left arms belong to children. Girls, in fact - five of them reported missing. But no sixth child has been reported missing. No bodies have been found at all.

Criminologist Goran Gavila brings in Officer Mila Vasquez to work with his team. Mila's specialty is finding missing children. She is battling her own demons as the team struggles to follow the clues left by a deranged and devious serial killer. But he seems to be one step ahead of them at all times, playing cat and mouse with the sixth girl as the prize.

I had a few issues with Mila that I don’t need to get into detail about. But with her background its inconceivable that she was ever admitted into a police force.

The bigger problem I had with this book is that even though the author creates excellent, and I really mean Excellent, plot twists he got a bit carried away with it.

Towards the end there was a new twist every 2 pages. It almost felt as if I was reading the plots of several books and each new twist only got a cursory glance before moving to the next one.

However as this is the author’s debut novel I am happy to overlook the slightly unpolished writing and have already lined up his next book to read very soon.

He really knows how to build momentum.
