This book was just not great. There were so many things that I read and immediately thought to myself, "is that really historically accurate?" as far as speech. But moreover, the main character, Marta, was boring as can be. Also, her thought processes - especially for when she first met Paul - were extremely unbelievable to me. Who spends months in solitary confinement being starved and tortured, and then when she's rescued, the first thing she thinks about the person rescuing her is "dang, this guy's cute." Come on!

Plus, there was no relationship building aside from Dava and Rose. Everyone else was either 0 to 60 or were skipped over completely and then referenced later. I just found things so implausible, and even when things should have been interesting, Marta was so bland that it was ruined.

Lastly, to whoever made the cover for my version of the book - sure would have been nice if you could have read literally the first 3 pages where Marta says that she wears glasses. Why can't covers get simple things right??

I have been really lucky lately, and am on a 'reading new books that I loved' streak.

If I could, I'd give this a 4.5. I'm all about fractions of stars in book reviews. And student work, come to think of it.

I read [bc:The Kommandant's Girl|374494|The Kommandant's Girl|Pam Jenoff|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1174267024s/374494.jpg|1394552] a few years ago and loved it, and obviously got distracted, or something, because I never followed up with any of Jenoff's other books. I'm doing my best to remedy this situation now. This was a great story, with a main character I connected with early on and cheered for throughout the story. There were some mild twists and turns, and I think now that I'm reading my 2nd Jenoff book in two days, there might be a slightly formulaic approach, but I couldn't put it down. Really a very good story, with an interesting protagonist and setting.

I love Pam Jenoff's books. I go into anything she writes knowing that I won't have difficulty getting into the book. She creates vivid, complex characters that I relate to and enjoy or sympathize with. This book was predictable but not boring. I found some of the plot a bit too unfeasible but it left my heart happy in the end.

This had some goooood plot twists that I enjoyed quite a bit. Also the plot points around Eastern Europe and when the Cold War started - very interesting.
