Read online, in preparation for reading [b:The Ballad of Black Tom|26883558|The Ballad of Black Tom|Victor LaValle|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1447086249l/26883558._SY75_.jpg|46932536] by Victor LaValle.

A rambling Pizzagate x Satanic Panic x NextDoor post fever dream.

Picked this up after reading Victor LaValle's The Ballad of Black Tom and read that his book was in conversation with this one.

The story definitely shows the racism and fear of the outsiders that Lovecraft is known for.  Did like the occult stuff, but the attribution to the foreigner is pretty blatant.

.... Unsurprisingly, it was racist. But like, even knowing what I was getting into, it was RACIST yknow

Anyway I only read this because it inspired Victor Lavalle's The Ballad of Black Tom and I wanted to have that context before reading that.

If you discovered this story through Victor LaValle's THE BALLAD OF BLACK TOM, it's a great fast read that introduces you to Lovecraft's universe and style. This also includes characters that LaValle references and features in his own novel.

This one, like the other Lovecraft I've gone through recently, was vivid in its imagery and I have to laud that gift in the crafting of the scenery of the imagination. That being said, this one was both more boring than the others I have read by the author, and it was shorter and thus less of a buildup of tension. Finally, and most notably, it was reeeeally racist at times, showing its age and the feelings of the author toward other ethnicities and peoples. While it served to describe the uncertainty felt by the narrator, the foreignness and odd behavior of other races in the story were gratuitous and clearly meant to imply these races were up to no good by their nature. Therefore, despite the end being very creepy and well-crafted, I think I cannot in good conscience give it a very high rating.
