The premise of this book:
What I liked:
- The conversation about the complexities of a woman’s heart 😅 Sir Percy being a mentor about this topic was so cute (especially after his mistakes in the first book 🤭)
- The portrayal of mob mentality, it’s quite scary to see how quickly things can escalate…
What I disliked:
- The absence of Marguerite (again) and also
Chauvelin ?! Where is our favourite antagonist 😭😭 - The romance. Déroulède seemed to be more in love with the idea of Juliette, rather than the woman Juliette. He placed her on a pedestal in his head and equated her to a perfect angel without even getting to know her character. Also, the fact Juliette was 24 and Déroulède was 40 made him calling her his Madonna kind of creepy 😓

When one reads a book series with the name of a principle character (e.g., The Scarlet Pimpernel) one expects for that character to feature prominently in each of the books. Not so in this case. The SP (sir percy blakeney) makes a couple of cameo appearances at best. Rather disappointed. Imagine a Jack Reacher novel where Jack shows up only for the last chapter... Odds bodkins—the mind boggles!

I can't help it. I need more Pimpernel!
***
Okay, still so good. But I didn't get any masked-avenger action until the last two chapters! I need more than that! This one had a little more description of the Jacobins than I was looking for, but the final action was good. Satisfying!

Although the Baroness seems to think very little of her fellow women, I enjoyed this story *almost* as much as "The Scarlet Pimpernel" and the prequels. This is probably the one I have enjoyed most of the rest of the series of novels that I have read.

This book pretty much delivered what I expected. I really loved the original Scarlet Pimpernel and now I’m working my way through the series, but I assume that none will be as good as the book which started it all. Objectively I can see that the original was not an amazing book but it’s so much fun I will happily ignore any literary issues. This one however isn’t good enough to get away from some of those flaws. It’s still great fun to read and pretty easy to get through in an afternoon, but the characters don’t really seem fully rounded. Those which feature heavily have some depth but not loads, and those which are secondary are very one dimensional unfortunately. The plot is good and entertaining, I wasn’t surprised by the reveal of the Scarlet Pimpernel but I don’t think you’re supposed to be, knowing something the characters don’t without being explicitly told is part of the fun. I still look forward to more of the same and it was exactly what I was looking for when I picked it up to read.

I felt the difference between the two girls was a bit annoying. Juliette is sweet and pretty and the bad things she does are despite herself. The hunchbacked girl Annie-Mie does everything out of jealousy.
One thing to note, though: the word "pathetic" is used in the archaic way, as in "emotional". So at least the author didn't mean anything by throwing that at Anne-Mie constantly.
I think it's interesting to see the gender differences in these books as well. Men do bad things out of pride, women out of jealousy.
The story itself was smart and dramatic. It was a lot of fun to read, as usual.

This was a really good sequel to the Scarlet Pimpernel. It had adventure, a sweet romance, and many fantastic characters.
