One of those books that leaves you side-eyeing the author because it came from his mind. I went into this book expecting a fast-paced thriller focused on home invasion and crime. It was fast and a thriller but way too gross.

Was utterly disgusted at times. Example: the killer expressing fascination with how little the hands of an *underage* victim of rape and kidnapping were. Couldn't finish it.

Content warning ⚠️: marked, unnecessarily descriptive pedophilia, rape, murder, animal murder, home invasion, kidnapping

Wish that books came with these warnings without having to dive deep into reviews in hopes of a reader mentioning them.

This is the most stressful book I have ever read. I had to put it down every few pages to get my heart rate under control.

This book was so emotionally draining. I feel like somewhat of a weight has been lifted off my shoulders now that I've finished it.

Well written and ~intense. Some parts annoyed me and Chyna as an overall character was sort of one dimensional. She seems like if you met her she wouldn't laugh at anything and would kind of just stare off into space until you stopped talking to her. Wanted more details about some things and less about others.

Not a perfect book but damn if it didn't make me check my locks and feel like I was about to be killed. Edger Vess is a hell of a villain.

Decided it wasn't worth finishing... couldn't justify the time on something I wasn't enjoying. I prefer Koontz's more sci-fi books - the ones where he explores the darkness inside a madman's head don't appeal to me.
