I really liked it! It's such a cute story, and even though it's one of the Roald Dahl books I never read as kid, I'm glad I finally got to read it. I remember liking some of his other books, and it's such an imaginative one. I will say that some of the gifts described at the end of the book were stereotypical, and that bothered me. And for some reason, the book didn't seem as magical as the movie did, which makes me hesitant to re-read some of Dahl's other books, because I feel like the magic and creativity of his books might not have the same effect on me as an adult as they did when I was a kid. It makes me wonder if maybe I'm too old for Roald Dahl, which makes me a little sad, because generally, I don't think you're too old to read anything. But in this case? Maybe it's possible. I'd still recommend it as a book, because I really like the overall creativity and the conversation that the BFG has with Sophie about how giants don't kill each other, and how kind the BFG is to Sophie.
My Rating: 4 stars. I really like the story, but it wasn't as magical as I thought it would be.

Fun to reread this one. Such a great story. I read it with Cai and he wasn't at all afraid, like I thought he would be. He even kept asking of the BFG is the one that gave him his dreams at night. If only!

I think the last time I read this, I was around ten years old. Maybe it's better when you're younger. I forgot how much of it is rambling. I also read this out loud to my daughter and fumbled through everything the BFG said, which was disorienting. It's good, but not as good as I remember.

We've been reading Roald Dahl's The BFG as a family. And, I gotta give my husband mad props for his reading skills. Not only did he do a great BFG voice, but he also handled the tongue twisters of the BFG's language with skill. In case you don't know, the BFG is the Big Friendly Giant and he and Sophie must team up to get the Queen's attention to prevent the other giants from continuing to eat "human beans". My favorite thing about this book is Dahl's use of language and how he found the perfect words to replace the word you were expecting to hear while at the same time making the BFG's meaning perfectly clear. As we were finishing the book, I had a revelation about the book in relation to Dahl's own life and I am happy that it was confirmed in his last sentences. This book was an absolute delight and I am really looking forward to the movie.
