The writing was poor and stiff. The characters were poorly written and the romance was so awkward!

I really enjoyed this story. I loved how much research clearly went into presenting the Native American side of this story and respecting their cultural heritage. The way Katherine's Navajo heritage was woven throughout the book really added to the rich details of the world. I felt like I got to appreciate more of her as a character knowing more of the ancient history she connects so strongly too through her people.
I really loved Gabe and Katherine together as well. I loved that this wasn't a story where she tossed aside all her previous thoughts on relationships the minute she met him and just fell into bed with him. I adored that he never pushed for more than Katherine was ready to give him. And through that journey they really found each other and the strength of a relationship they could build together. Of course all of that is happening while they're dodging bullets and figuring out just what is going on. The mystery/suspense elements were well done and I appreciated that Katherine wasn't as impetuous as some of the previous heroine's. She wasn't throwing herself into dangerous situations without thinking through the risks or taking the appropriate steps to insure as much safety as possible. She was going to do her job as a reporter, get to the truth, but was also going to do her best to make sure whoever was trying to kill her didn't get an easy chance at it. I felt for Gabe in this story as well. His past has left a mark on his soul and he's determined not to open that wound up again. But in doing so he's never really healed. And all of just who Kat is, is forcing that confrontation with his past whether he planned for it or not.
I really liked these two together and the story was well developed. I struggle a bit listening to audio with a heavier sexual content, but the narrator here was really good and I could switch back and forth and enjoy both the written and audio version as I read.

I really like Pamela Clare's writing and plot development. There's no doubt it's very entertaining and well thought-out. This is now the 3rd book I've read in this series (I skipped the first one, but I do plan to go back and read it soon) and I keep noticing the same trend. While the stories themselves are different, the male hero is often very similar and, to some degree, so is the heroine. I like how different the mystery plots are, but the romance itself follows a similar formula. It's always the commitment-phobe hero who falls head over heels and there's always talk about condomless sex and pregnancy. The heroine always seems to be fine with having a baby, even if she has to raise on her own. This is getting tiresome and I think it caused me to knock out a star.
One other inconsistency I could was that at one point, Kat cut her hair to her shoulders in grief, but a few chapters later, she had really long hair again. I think only a few weeks passed between this time period, so I found that jarring. There's also a line in which she is talking to Gabe and seems to randomly point out that people call her Kat instead of Katherine, but I didn't really see a lead up to that. It makes me wonder if the author had previously written dialogue there that was cut off, because the line seemed to come out of nowhere.
Other than that, I found the book well done and fun to read. It didn't quite capture me the same way as the other two. Maybe because I found it hard to relate to Kat's thought processes and culture. I did find all the Navajo background different and interesting. I liked how the story centered around that and I liked finding out who the "bad guys" were. The story between her and Gabe, though, felt a bit less interesting. For that reason, I knocked it down to 3 stars.
It's still very much worth reading and I can't wait to continue the series.

My only qualm with these books is that every one of them has to end with the woman getting pregnant - there can be a happily ever after without a baby! The last chapter of the books is always just a bit too cheesy and mushy for me.

Instead of wanting to scrape Kat off his skin and leave her, he'd wanted to hold her, to kiss her until she fell asleep, to feel the warmth of her skin against his. Somehow she filled the emptiness inside him, made him feel whole again.
First Impressions
Naked Edge is the fourth book in the I-Team series and this has been a series I have been working through as this is an author I have really been enjoying and this book was also part of the TBR I had for the Romanceopoly Reading Challenge as well. I am actually speechless with this book, this one just HIT so different than I expected it to. I honestly wasn't sure how this one would turn out, because yeah journalist heroines don't always work for me, but the way that this author wrote this one was right in every single way. I couldn't get enough of what was delivered in this one. With the blend of suspense, the native american heritage introduced, the tortured hero turned into a playboy for his emotional survival, and a heroine determined to hold out for marriage and true love just combined into a story of swoons and perfection.
First Line
The coyote came out of nowhere.
The Main Protagonists
The Hero: Gabriel Rossiter
The Heroine: Katherine James
"What you did proved to me that you care more about me than you care about sex. A man who only cares about sex stops only if a woman asks him to stop. Thank you for caring about me, Gabe Rossiter.
Summary
Katherine James is a Navajo journalist and while hiking, she is almost killed and Gabe, a park ranger, saves her life. But what Kate didn't know was that Gabe would be her savior when law enforcement would disturb a sacred Navajo ritual and rescue her from an abusive cop who was dragging her by her hair with a broken leg. Gabe saved her twice and she found a friend in someone who respected her beliefs and wants something more with him. But there is something more to Gabe than meets the eye. Gabe is burdened with the loss of his wife and has lost faith in love and is determined to bury the pain with hot sex and little else. Kate is the first woman he has come across, that stands firm on what she wants and fight for it. He is drawn to her in a way that he can't explain, but there is a danger on the horizon, that only with their love will it be strong enough to survive the coming storm.
Maybe I was trying to understand why a man with so much heart acts like he no longer has one
What I Loved
Naked Edge was poignant heartfelt and introspective and truly inspiring in every single way that mattered and this author had me feeling so many emotions on such a deep level. I wanted so much for these two to find their HEA and their journey was worth every moment of hardship that they both suffered. I just ached for both of them and what they were struggling with here. And what complete opposites they were but in some ways it was the opposites that had them connecting in the way that we see happen.
Our heroine is strong and firm in her values and is literally looking for that one time love and won't let go of that dream. She is a virgin and not ashamed of it, in fact she is proud of her life decisions and holding it special for the right one. Then we have our hero who is tortured by his past, and while he liked it rough and hard, it leaves him empty every single time. And with one kiss or touch with Kate, she centers him and has him feeling every single touch as if it touches his soul. And while they search for what happened to her grandfather being killed, we also see the danger is escalating for both Kate and Gabe as they search for artifact hunters and seeking the truth to what happened to Kate's grandfather. And their connection only deepens as time passes. And what a beautiful connection we see grow between Kate and Gabe and I was on board from the very beginning.
The wind knows you. You're a man of this land, of the earth.
I also enjoyed how this author implemented the Native American aspects to the story. It was so rich and had the right touch to it. I love that I could go into this story, trusting that it wouldn't get political and it most definitely didn't. It had such genuine writing in it to just recognize the heritage aspects without it being preachy or shoved down the throat. Just authentic with every sentence written. You could tell that the author did her research well for this story but also wasn't trying to prove anything, just write a well written story and she succeeded. And I gobbled it up like you do turkey on Thanksgiving Day.
"You're not broken, Gabe Rossiter. You're just afraid to let yourself feel because feeling hurts so much. But feeling is part of living. You can't escape it. If you try, you'll hurt yourself worse than Jill ever could.
What I Struggled With
Nothing lol It could have been a bit more engaging in the beginning, but other than the slight slow start, it was perfect!
Narration
So WELL DONE!! And while I wasn't grabbed right away, I didn't become hooked and I have to say its all thanks to how this book was narrated. I just didn't want to put this audiobook down at all. Just would have been content to listen to their book all day.
Overall View
Naked Edge is a story to thrill you from head to toe with tantalizing sensuality, with deep to the heart character growth and such inspiring emotion that will tug at your heart strings! EPIC IN EVERY WAY!

"I love you, Katherine James. I love you with everything I am. You're the best thing that's ever happened to me. Remember that.
No, Gabe, please! Don't do this! I need you! Let me save you! "You already have."

Steam/Spice Explanations
Simmering cup of tea---soft warm touches and light intimacy
Warmin' by the fire- a medium level of sexual tension, a balance of sexual and emotional intimacy, lighter on the details in the sexual moments.
Steamin' up the room -the sexual content is more explicit in the language and tone, heavier amount of sexual scenes.
Blazing fire to the building-The prime focus is the sex scenes, scorching hot, and could burn one. Less focus on the emotional intimacy to the relationship.

Naked Edge to me is more raw, elemental and spiritual as it shows Kat's Navajo traditions and beliefs. It was so very different from the other books, but still very compelling and involving!
This book was so culturally rich that I felt like I was learning along with Gabe as she explained her beliefs and traditions. I felt like it went beyond the superficial customs and delved beneath the surface into the why of their traditions. Instead, it's about her spiritual connection to the earth and nature around her, as well as her Navajo traditions.
Not only was this a perfect way to move the plot along, but it made Kat more real to me. You could sense that she cares about her faith. Even though she lives in Denver, she's still a reservation girl.
Gabe's problems are nothing new in Romancelandia, but they're portrayed well and realistically. One thing I liked about the book was the distinct difference in tone between Kat's and Gabe's points of view in the narrative. People are well characterized when you can tell whose perspective is being told just by the writing, word choice, and syntax, and that was the case here. I was a bit annoyed by the paragraph breaks between POVs, but both Gabe and Kat had strong voices throughout the narrative.
Gabriel Rossiter was the star in this book! Clare manages to make me love each of her characters, especially her heroes. But for some reason, I felt that Gabe's POV stood out among the others. I LOVED reading into his thoughts. How he longed for Kat, how he struggled with his feelings for her, how feelings of sadness and anger for Jill fluctuated with each other. All of this made me love him even more! To me, Gabe represented the ultimate alpha with his protectiveness. But there was one more thing that made me love him so much... it was the fact that throughout the whole thing, he never made promises he couldn't keep. He never told Kat about his feelings. He let her know what he could and couldn't give her without revealing the secrets of his past. I've to respect that.
Gabe and Kat had a solid relationship that felt completely genuine and natural. The book really pulled me in and I enjoyed the emotional journey the story took me on with the characters.
Clare puts so much heart into her little books. She manages to make me laugh and cry in equal measure, making each book a roller coaster ride of emotions.
Naked Edge is no exception.

"Hey, Dorkangelo, change of plans. Take the next right."
And so, it begins my true love affair with Marc, Julian and Gabe. I love how Marc and Julian were so involved in this one and so damn funny together. Love those boys.
Gabe and Kat- definitely "MFEO" Made for each other. The story in this one was solid- the scavenging of Native American artifacts and how important their connection to the land is.
May add more later... my brain needs a break.

ABSO-FREAKING-LUTELY AMAZING
If someone were to ask me which one of the I-Team books that I liked best, I don't know that I could honestly answer them. Each of them have been such strong stories of love, devotion & commitment that it's hard to pick a favorite. However, Gabe & Kat's story comes awfully close for me. Something about their story just speaks to my heart. Gabe is so broken and sure that he is beyond repair. Kat so pure & steadfast in her goal - about to pass him up because she almost doesn't allow herself to see what is on the inside. Once they connect the story is magical!
Well done Pamela Clare!
