The Value of a Star: Ratings Explained

Question:

What is the bibliophile's dilemma?

Answer:

The books you can't help but read as fast as possible are the same books you wish would never end.

Solutions? I'd love to hear them.

Until then, I hope to find more books that hurt as good as The Riyria Revelations.

This series is just fun. It's fantasy with twists and red herrings. Elves, dwarves, goblins, and dragons. Thieves and nobles. Kings and queens. Swords fights. Mysteries to solve. Characters that stick with you. Lost treasures. Magic. Tragedy. Betrayal. Villains. Heroes. Sacrifice. Triumph. Happy endings.

It's not without it's flaws. Literary purists might not make it past the convenient plot resolutions or the entire first book (that was rough...).

But reading is about fun, and there are mountains of fun to be had here. Reading these books made me really, really happy.

Doesn't sound good to you? Go read a biography.

It's violent without being gory, and the language stays PG and never uses 4-letters. It's high suspense and lots of action. The 12-and-up crowd will eat it up.

Note that the publisher took the original 6 books and make them into 3 volumes, each with 2 parts. So instead of 6 separate books you'll likely see these three:

Theft of Swords
Rise of Empire
Heir of Novron

Happy reading!

It's funny because I found myself comparing this 6-book series to the Jim Butcher 6-book series I recently finished. I highly enjoyed both series, but I found myself growing really tired of Butcher's series when Sullivan's Riyria Revelations stayed vibrant throughout, in fact I think I liked it more and more with each book. Don't go back and look at my ratings though.

The funny part is that I'm on book 15 of the Dresden files and loving that series more and more.

You might be able to put it to the fact that the Butcher books are more bloated whereas the Sullivan books are really streamlined. Butcher's series does a great job with the characters and people's but it doesn't flow like Sullivan's. Sullivan has the ability to throw information about the world without having to info dump all that terribly much. With fantasy, it's just about impossible to prevent an info-dump, but Sullivan has found the key balance that works wonderfully.

At this point, you're probably going to finish the series regardless of what I say. Don't let the fact that Percepliquis is about twice the size of the other books reduce your excitement for the series. It reads just like the rest, which is just right.

4.5 out of 5 stars (highly recommended)

Wow! Great final book. I am sad that this is the end of Royce and Hadrians story but I am glad to have been a part of the journey. Loved the plot twist at the end. I could not get enough of the subtle connections between the characters that became clear towards the readers in this book. The ending got me teary-eyed.

Great series. Would 100% recommend. 5/5

I took my time reading this, despite wanting to rush through it as quickly as possible. I didn't want it to end and I feared the worst. I laughed as I always do, because even in the most intense moments there is humor. And let's be real guys, I cried a lot; both from happiness and from sadness. It was a long journey and despite wanting more, I was satisfied with the series wrap-up.

So cheers to the Riyria Revelations and one hell of a book hangover I know is coming on strong! It was a whirlwind of an adventure and I can't wait to read your next series, Michael!
