Gilded Age NYC, late 1800s, Genevieve is from an old Knickerbocker family and she's trying to be a journalist. She gets involved trying to figure out some burglaries and murders, getting involved with Daniel of the mysterious past. A very standard mystery that leans a bit too hard on the romance. Still, it's told well and flows smoothly. I'll keep reading.
It took me a little bit to settle into this book, but once I did, I was enjoying it. This was a really interesting mystery. Genevieve and Daniel made a great sleuthing pair, and I enjoyed the slow burn romance that sparking between them.
The setting of Gilded-Age New York City was a nice change of pace. It seems like usually historical mysteries/romances are set in London. There were tons of ballrooms and back alleys to show the juxtaposition of the classes.
Overall, this was a well written mystery and I'm sure the start of a great historical mystery series. It really neatly meshes the historical, romance and mystery genres and I can't wait to see where the series goes from here.

This is Kate Belli's first novel and wow... please give me more... I would love to see what happens in the next book.
Such a fun and interesting read! I can't wait to read the second book!
Great start to a Gilded Age mystery series. If you are a fan of Victoria Thompson's Gaslight mysteries or Rhys Bowen's Molly Murphy series, this is right up your alley. Genevieve Stewart, a debutante past her prime but in no rush to get married, is working as a journalist, trying to get her big break. While chasing the elusive Robin Hood jewel theif, she meets Daniel McCaffrey, a mysterious member of elite society. Hi jinks and adventures ensue in this delightful, but edgy, mystery. We are taken on a ride from Mrs. Astor's 400 to the underbelly of New York tenements and Tammany Hall. I highly recommend this series!
A thief lurks, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. Suspence and suspicion wind through this novel, with a female journalist at the heart of the telling. Struggling to balance societal convention and expectation, dodging rumor following a broken engagement, and tailing a man who is part attraction and part enigmatic possible suspect, this heroine quickly becomes a part of your reading life and you won't want to put this book down. I am so excited that this book is listed as "A Gilded Gotham Mystery #1" as it implies that #2 is in the future and I, for one, cannot wait.

Loved this book. I love anything in the Gilded Age and also love a couple that solves mysteries. It had the similar vibes (which are excellent to) the Below Stairs Mysteries (Jennifer Ashley) and the Gaslight Mysteries (Victoria Thompson). I loved the characters and the world setup. The mystery was also very well done. Looking forward to devouring this series.
