Good book about a journalist trying to find out who committed the murders and she gets herself into danger but thankfully she makes a friend!

An enjoyable Gilded Age mystery with bits of romance. A warning: the mystery is solved at the end (as you would suspect), but there is no HEA.

I enjoyed this book, since I'm a fan of the Veronica Speedwell mysteries and this has a similar setup.
Single young pretty woman with a career that's sort of unconventional for her time. Meets handsome man who is a bit of a rogue for past reasons. They intersect and have to work together to solve a mystery of a sort and have an unspoken (mostly) attraction to each other that is not acted upon (in this novel). Nice read and light compared to some of the heavier crime/police procedural fiction I usually read, but not quite a cozy like some I love to come down from the heavy crime. Nice break for me and looking forward to reading book #2.

Sidebar: I also enjoyed a book with no profanity, no gratuitous violence, and no overt sexual acts. It was nice to read a "clean" story. :-)

Started out good but the character kept doing such very dumb things. And requesting booking a room to "talk"? In the late 1800's?? Riiiiight. And elevators were not common there at that time, but characters just treat them like nothing strange.

For a debut novel, I was impressed. One of my favorite HM Series (Gaslight Mystery) features a similar setting, and I loved visiting familiar real world people and places. The mystery was interesting, and the banter/quasi partnership between Genevieve and Daniel made the book complete.

I cannot wait for the next mystery.
