A witty chronicle of a wild childhood in a turbulent place and time. The middle sections dragged a bit, and I wish this had been condensed and consolidated with the Paris years, but overall a rollicking and engaging account.

This book wasn't very interesting, and nothing really happened. I mean the most interesting part of the book was when the Soviets took their houses and property away and tried to get rid of the rich people. And that was only interesting because I could compare it to stories that took place in other countries where they actually killed the rich instead of just taking their money away. Honestly, I kept expecting these people to have to leave in the middle of the night running for their lives, but that never happened, and they were allowed to live and sell their jewelry until they decided they were done with the Bolsheviks. I might have given this book 3 stars, but it falls into that trap that so many books about Muslims do of forcing a child into marriage and having an unhappy relationship. Honestly, if you just listened to literature, you'd think there is not a happily married muslim in the world. I am assured that these people do exist, so why don't any of them write books with a happily married couple who have to face some tragedy together? Or write a romance novel where the couple love each other. I don't know. But anyway, I'm taking off an entire star for the stupid marriage plot line.

If you want to know how rich people lived in Baku before the soviets came and how their lives changed  - that’s the book.
