Plodding and dull, except when describing the Breton landscape, but there's so much of that it gets in the way of the story.

I enjoyed the descriptions of this area in France. The detective Dupin is very funny with subtle dry humor. The mystery was impossible to figure out for the reader until the final chapter. I would have liked this more if hints were thrown in earlier.

EH. Three stars because I just enjoy an atmospheric procedural and it was fun to go around on islands. But two stars because ...eh. I'm not sure how much EH to chalk up to being lost in translation. I think a lot of character interactions and development did get lost but even looking past that the EH remains. Also, my god, never have I seen such an atrocity of copyediting make it to print.

This book was okay. I had trouble choosing between 2 stars and 3 stars here. 2 stars for formatting, 3 stars because it's an okay book. One of the few times I wish we had half stars on Goodreads, so that I could rate it 2.5.
Bannalec's American editors do a great disservice to him by not proofreading the book. The translation is not one-for-one. Words run together that should not, paragraphs start and stop at random, words are included that should not be in sentences - it made reading this book quite frustrating.
That aside, the storyline is interesting enough. It's definitely not my favorite series, and while I likely wouldn't have picked up books 1 or 3 to continue the series even if there weren't so many egregious typos, I definitely will not be continuing the series because of the egregious typos. Perhaps Bannalec's books in his native tongue are a joy to read, but in English they are awful.
