I have the second book of this trilogy (Marked for Revenge) on my TBR pile & thought I’d better get my mitts on the first one instead of jumping into the middle of a series. Glad I did.
The publicity blurb gives a good synopsis of the story line so I won’t re-blab too much of the plot. This is an excellent example of compelling Scandi-noir with a strong female protagonist. Jana Berzelius is a public prosecutor & ends up working with police on a complex case with shocking ties to her personal past. As the book progresses, we learn what is lurking behind her cool, uber-eficient facade.
The author hooks us (and Jana) up to a slow drip of background info that has major ramifications for how the case will play out. She also tackles tough subjects such as child trafficking & abuse of immigrants seeking asylum, topics that have chilling relevance in current affairs.
It’s a dark, fast paced read with a wide range of characters. Some will invoke your sympathy, others you’ll abhor. What kept me reading was trying to figure out how the MC would get herself out of the whole snarly mess. By the end, police close the case but we know there is much more to the story & it sets the stage for an inevitable showdown between Jana & one of the characters.
My only complaint has to do with the translation. I’m not sure if Ms. Schepp or someone else produced the english version. Regrettably, there are many instances of odd word choices & awkward phrasing that cause your eyes to stumble & take note. It pulls you out of the moment which is unfortunate as there’s a great story here that would be even better with improved flow. However, as a first novel it’s still an impressive debut.
If you’re a fan of “cozies”, step away! The obvious comparisons as far as the MC is concerned would be those created by Carol O’Connell, Taylor Stevens & (to a lesser extent) Stieg Larsson. I’d recommend starting here as there is a tremendous amount of back story that will no doubt inform the rest of the series. On to book #2!

Jag köpte den här för att jag egentligen skulle läsa hennes femte bok i serien, men tänkte att jag skulle börja med den första. Det kanske var ett misstag. Det var i alla fall mitt misstag att börja med en bok som har barn som far illa, jag pallar inte det. En sak som jag störde mig på var också de homogena karaktärerna.
Så någon annan tycker säkert den är bättre (3,55 på goodreads), men inget för mig, tack.
Och sen undrar jag varför de alltid kallar folk vid titlar i kriminalböcker? ”Ursäkta mig, kommissarien...” Det här ser jag inte i någon annan typ av böcker - har jag på något sätt missat att man pratar så i polisvärlden? Om det skulle komma en polis till mitt jobb och fråga efter någon, skulle jag då plötsligt säga ”om kommissarien vill vara så god och slå sig ner i receptionen, så ska jag hämta redaktör Teflon med detsamma”?

Any fans of Swedish thriller & mystery books will enjoy this first in a series. Although I noticed a few quirks that I think got lost in its actual translation this was a highly energetic & fascinating read! Eager for the next installment.

Ik had het genoegen Emelie Schepp te mogen ontmoeten op de boekenbeurs in Linköping op 1 december 2018. Na een interessante babbel en bijhorende signeer- en fotosessie kocht ik de hele Jana Berzelius-reeks (4 delen, het vijfde boek komt uit in maart 2019) en begon enthousiast aan het eerste deel - märkta för livet - dat ongelofelijk goede kritieken kreeg.
Het verhaal? Aanklager Jana Berzelius wordt op een moordzaak gezet die dichter aanleunt bij haar eigen verleden dan ze ooit kon vermoeden. Dat de dood van hoofd van migrationsverket haar in haar eigen verleden zou doen graven had niemand bij aanvang verwacht en zorgt voor een boeiende parallelle verhaallijn als het ware. De opsporingen van het politieteam leiden naar de haven, waar vermoedens van narcotica en mensenhandel steeds meer worden bevestigd....
Het boek loste de verwachtingen in en bevat alles wat je van een spannende deckare (misdaadroman dus) kan verwachten. Een strak en spannend plot, onverwachte en geloofwaardige wendingen en sterke personages. Een ware pageturner met een realistische verhaallijn. Dat alles zich afspeelt in en rond Norrköping en Linköping; waar we wonen, is natuurlijk een leuk herkenningspunt.
Het krachtige aan het boek is zonder twijfel het feit dat het hoofdpersonage een vrouw is, in tegenstelling tot de meeste Scandinavische deciare, waar een aan lager wal geraakte, vaak alcoholverslaafde mannelijke politierechercheur de plak zwaait (denken we aan Jo Nesbo, Håkan Nesser enz). Jana is een topwijf en dat draagt bij tot het verhaal.
Het verband met Jana's eigen verleden gaf me daarentegen een dubbel gevoel. Enerzijds zorgt het voor een extra dimensie. Anderzijds vind ik het al te toevallig dat net deze zaak op haar bureau terecht komt, wat de geloofwaardigheid niet ten goede komt. Maar hoe dan ook een goed geschreven spannende misdaadroman. Nummer twee van de reeks ligt al klaar op het nachtkastje!

En lite annorlunda vinkling på den typiska Skandinaviska kriminalromanen. Huvudpersonen är en åklagare, Jana, istället för polis. Dessutom har hon ett ovanligt förflutet - som hon inte minns - och är ganska oberäknelig. Polisen Mia med lyxfällan-problem är mer sympatisk. Fast egentligen kunde jag inte relatera till några av personrena i boken i någon särlig grad och bedömningen är väl kanske hellre 2.5* än 3. Jag är inte säker på att jag kommer att idas följa Janas vidare färd, men eftersom utbudet ljudböcker är begränsat så finns möjligheten.

If there’s one thing Swedish authors know how to do it’s build some tension - but I feel like the second half of the book didn’t quite measure up considering how high the stakes were halfway through, and the resolution was disappointingly easy. Well paced and an intriguing development on all the side characters, but they just didn’t get fleshed out enough for the glimpses we did see of their lives

An amazing thrilling read by Emelie Schepp. Though the start is a little slow but it's ok because it sets the novel for what's to come next.
After the 150 page mark, the pace speeds up and gives a spy novel feel. I liked how the protagonist Jana Berzelius is linked to the story. Never before have I read such a character with such a background.
A total must read!
