This was just okay, it dragged a lot in the beginning but thankfully, the story picks up midway. I liked the idea of the zombies and the super powers were a lot of fun. It took a bit for me to connect with these characters but I liked the cute lil' romance with Sid and Brian (though the romance was more of a slow burn) and Sid's character growth was nice to see. Also Chad the cat was an amazing addition.

Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the ARC!

Not even halfway through the book I began desperately searching for more by this author. The main character, Spencer, was one of my favorites in a long time. She wasn't over powered or the chosen one or anything like that, which is refreshing for this genre. Her personality and flaws were well written. The characters were all well thought out, even the villains weren't one dimensional. Now the spoilers:
1.
When we thought Nell died I actually cried. Hadn't even met the character it was just that good

2.
I can't pick a favorite character. I really liked Eleni. She was mean but she was doing what she could to protect everyone.

3.
When she understood the evil dude?? Top tier. I do think the ending where she asked about empathy implies that she wasn't like him the way she initially feared, which she had figured out by that point

I haven't really been into reading a lot of YA recently, but I'm glad I picked this book up. It was super fun, and it was like a combination of some of my favorite things. I haven't really bin into the zombie troupe for a while either. I feel like the Walking Dead did it to....well, death. Wasley gave us an interesting fresh take and I had a lot of fun with this one!

Thanks to Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Dead Things Are Closer Than They Appear

Format: Audiobook

Rating: 3.5/5 ⭐️

Vibes:

· Teenage cringe

· Zombies

· Magic

I think the gist of my review will be that this was a good book and I would have enjoyed it 10 years ago, or maybe would have enjoyed it if I read the physical version rather than listened to an audiobook.

I liked how many surprises there were. An evil villain in the story, magic and zombies.

This book is perfection! I felt I was watching a fantasy movie like Percy Jackson or shadow hunters.

I can find no fault with this book. The storyline and plot kept me intrigued. I love the representation (Asian and black), the BTS references, the dialogue, the humor. It was all so good. The world building was also easy to understand and follow.

I also love the message. Of how even the ordinary can be extraordinary.

I love the romance aspect as well. It was such a buildup and though it was pure it still made you blush and kick your feet.

Overall, absolutely one of my fav fantasy books 🩷
