Down and dirty pictures: Miramax, Sundance and the rise of independent film by Peter Biskind

A deep, deep dive into the indie scene in the 80s and 90s. Fascinating stuff, especially the culture around Miramax and the Weinsteins. Published in 2004, long before Ronan Farrow blew the lid off Harvey's numerous sequel assaults, it's still weird that there isn't even a hint that it was going on. It's conspicuous in its absence, given the level of detail the rest of his behaviour gets.
I'd be interested in an updated edition that catches up with the major players and where they are now, for sure!

Interesting and very very detailed acount of the birth and development of Miramax and Sundance, with a lot of fascinating little stories about particular films and directors along the way. Weinstein comes across as a thug.

Biskind is a terrific raconteur but often it’s hard to know when he’s exaggerating the truth for the sake of entertainment. Considering everything that’s come out about Harvey Weinstein since this was written I’m willing to be more believing with this book.

Fascinating stories about a really fascinating time in Hollywood, little too dense for my taste and sometimes it’s so easy to lose track of all the people involved. Also didn’t care much for the Sundance parts, either way some great stories in here

While there are interesting anecdotes in this book, it is way too long and unfocused and really petty. I don't know that I can say that I learned that much from this book.

ashamed to say, it just made me long for a full book of “tarantino, corrupted” content

Thorough chronicle of the 90's independent film scene, but after awhile it felt like one Harvey Weinstein tirade after another. The author writes in that annoying, clipped syntax used in Variety, puts words in other people's mouths, and obviously has an ax to grind w/ Robert Redford. Kinda made me nostalgic for movies like Pulp Fiction, that come out of nowhere and get everybody talking.
