Some adventure, mystery and macabre. The language is accessible for the struggling/reluctant reader but the content is mature enough to not be condescending.

The vibes were nice and creepy. It was eerier than I expected and I loved this through line of the war that raged just beyond our line of sight. There was a strong sense of foreboding, both from world events and the supernatural. The relationships between the teen characters felt natural and realistic, reminding me a lot of the vibe in Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes. Finally the imagery and writing and evocative. All around a good Autumn read (even if it takes place during the summer - there’s a lot of rain and mist)

Cuando empece este libro, me esperaba tantas cosas y con miedo a que no cumpliese mis expectativas, pero las mejoro, me encanto la historia y estoy deseando leer mas de este autor.

Zafón wrote this story with young readers in mind and hoped it would also appeal to older readers whether aged '23 or 40 or 83'. I read the book with this in mind. Zafón was successful - I found this a quick, but enjoyable read.

As expected, the storytelling is linear and fairly straight forward, yet the author creates a dramatic and evocative atmosphere with very little description... Despite its quick pace and action-based plot, the book is also unnervingly spooky (even for an adult). This took me completely by surprise!

A number of dark motifs and scenes wil most definitely stay with me (ueber-creepy!) ... The more adult [b:The Shadow of the Wind|1232|The Shadow of the Wind (The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, #1)|Carlos Ruiz Zafón|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1344545047s/1232.jpg|3209783] had the same effect on me. Zafón really knows how to get under your skin (shudder).

I would recommend this book as a creepy, evocative adventure for young readers and those who are young at heart

This book is beautifully translated from the Spanish and is sincerely kind of creepy, in a wonderful way! It is a mystery/thriller with magical realism & horror elements and though very much for younger, tween, readers, it will be a fast and fun page-turner for adults. Highly recommended and can't wait to read his other books, especially in this series.
