Since I read the rest in the series I wanted to read the last book too. I took me ages to get through it. Mostly because it was a tedious walk through caves and basicly the novel takes on the same subject covered in the other books: jalousy, Aylas accent, her medicin skils, her clan heritage etc. Basicly endless repeat.

Spoiler
The big finale is that the "how children are made" becomes known by everybody and put in the song of the mother. Not any other surprises or a big finale.

This is apparently the final book in the series, and I must say, I was very disappointed. For all the time, effort, getting to know the characters and living with them for so long, this book was a large let down.
I don't know if Ms. Auel lost her inspiration for this series, but the last three books lacked the spark of the first three, with Plains of Passage being a bridge book and a good read.

Disappointing end to a long series.

Really not good. Most of the book is spent describing the different sacred caves Ayla visits. Pages upon pages of descriptions of cave paintings. And boring sex, too.

Trist, extremt repetativt och utan spänningsmoment av något slag. Besvikelsen är total.

...so *that's* what the whole thing was about? Sheesh.

On the other hand, I've been reading the series for fifteen years, and of course I'm attached, and for some reason I cried like nineteen times while reading this at once mediocre and sadly-final installment.

Well, clearly Ms. Auel put a lot of work and effort into this. BUT...I agree with the other comments. It is such a shame this book wasn't edited well. This could have been an enjoyable book at 250 to 300 pages. As it is, I really can't recommend it.

Thank fuck that is now over.

I’m just going to pretend that the last two books don’t exist and remember the first four with fond nostalgia from reading them as a child.

This was just bad.

Honestly, disappointed that this was the last book in the series. The writing and the viewpoint was nothing like the other ones. There was so much repetition of words I skipped a lot of pages. Not a good time.
