pretty self explanatory. there's a vampire and she's gay
I feel like if I really wanted to delve and do a literary analysis on this book I could, but as a merely quick read over the spooky season, I found it just OK. I feel like this book was hyped up as a lot more spooky than it actually was. I don’t know if it’s just the edited version that I read or whatever, but I mostly found it fairly dull compared to other things I’ve read from a similar time, Such as Turn of the Screw and Frankenstein.
Also, know it was written in a different age from a lot of stuff I’ve read lately, but it just seemed very tell-y. Maybe it was the letter format that just recounted too much step-by-step plot without a lot of emotion, or what, but I didn’t fall as deeply into this book as I had hoped. However, if I wanted to think about it, harder and dissect its meanings in relation to its era, I would probably give it four stars instead of three.

The girlies ate with this one. Literally.
Much has been said of Carmilla and its offering to the world of sapphic vampires and gothic romance, so I won't dwell too much on that. Instead, I'd like to point out the rather interesting portrayal of the vampire as a social climber. The undead Countess Karnstein uses girls from well-off noble families like the narrator Laura and the doomed Bertha Rheinfeldt, keeping them alive long enough to offer her shelter, comfort, pleasure, and wealth before she kills them. Meanwhile, peasant girls (whose own deaths are dismissed by Laura's father as a plague or illness sweeping through the villages) are mere fodder, drained and then tossed away.
I've always felt that the vampire is a particularly effective allegory for the rich and powerful sustaining themselves on the suffering and death of the masses, and Carmilla illustrates my point very nicely.
