10 years ago when I first read this book, I immediately became obsessed with the whole series.
I think 15-year-old me initially gave this book 4 or 5 stars.
Having attempted to re-read it (and failing), I am forced to give it 1 star.

Why would I give this book 1 star? Firstly, I could not ignore the glaring cliches. Secondly, the conversations between characters feel forced, awkward, and unnatural.
I just can't fathom how at one point I managed to complete the first 6 books of this series in less than 2 months, and now I can't even get past the first half...
I suppose the juvenile level of writing and story-telling in these types of books (mostly YA...) is no longer appealing to me, unless the premise is REALLY intriguing.
Unfortunately, while I like vampires and such, this story was not remarkable in any way. Everything about it was so juvenile. There were other things that I did not appreciate, but I won't mention them as they are not politically correct (sue me for not appreciating -forced- political correctness).

After this unsuccessful attempt at re-reading this book, I have decided to get rid of all the books I own in this series. I don't think I will ever re-read them as I would rather read other books at this point.
Indeed a lot can change in a decade.

I feel like this book's rating was all about expectations. I see plenty of previous reviews where it received 1-2 stars, and i just have to wonder what the readers expected when they picked it up. I wanted something brainless that I could demolish in one sitting, and that's exactly what I got. I certainly rolled my eyes more than once, but I also caught myself being curious to see where the plot was headed. All in all, 2.5, but I'll be nice and round up.

A slow start, didn't like the intro at all, really the book didn't need a prologue, but everything after that just gets better and better. My favorite character would have to be Damien, Vocabulary all the way!

There were so many problems with this book. The typical teen bullshit started from page one. I don’t like ridiculous drama for the sake of it. I don’t like whiny, self-absorbed teenagers either. Zoey is the middle child which, by default, makes her the problem child. Naturally, she’s chosen to become this all powerful “vampyre” because she follows a long line of Cherokee Wise Women that just so happened to skip her mom *and* her elder sister.

What really got me about this book was Zoey’s narration - the use of the word retard/retarded like it was not problematic, the constant shaming of others (whether it’s enough and goth subcultures, her sister’s cheerleading, or nerd culture,) the slut shaming, the body shaming...it goes on and on. I pretty much lost it when this (white-presenting) girl talks about one of the hags’ hair on page 88...”must be a really good weave.” Are you kidding me?

Zoey has a holier than thou attitude that never really gets checked, but I did read the whole book and I am still mildly interested in the story. I don’t foresee wasting my time reading the rest of the series, but maybe if I have nothing else to do with my life I’ll pick it up.

The Cast mother and daughter team captures you from the first few pages. I loved the fact that they incorporated Pagan views and traditions and not follow the typical, Hollywood steryotype society has placed on the religion. I was left wanting more. I cannot wait to see what is next for Zoey within her journey of becomming a vampyre and I'm curious to know what the Goddess Nyx has planned for this special fledgling.

P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast feels like revisiting an old friend. I first read this series in high school, and the magic hasn't faded a bit. The books has blending supernatural intrigue with the relatable struggles of Zoey as she navigates life and the complexities of becoming a vampire.
What sets this series apart is its depth beyond just vampires. It delves into Zoey's personal growth, friendships, and the challenges of embracing a new identity. i loved re reading this book.
Personally, the series has left such a mark on me that I now proudly wear a moon tattoo inspired by its mystical allure. the book is timeless
Surpasses Twilight in its narrative richness and character development. It's a must-read for anyone seeking a paranormal adventure.
