I'm not sure what to think of this book. I definitely liked it way better than some of Cornwell's latest Scarpetta installments. However, she's gotten so far from the first few books in the series, style-wise, that it is like reading a different author and a different protaganist. I give it three stars because it kept me interested, but it wasn't what I was hoping for from her. I keep reading her Scarpetta series because I've read them all, and I keep hoping they'll get as good as they were in the beginning.

It was both good and bad to see Ms. Cornwell switch back to the first person. It was good because it re centered the series back to the main character and gives a view point that was desperately missing from the stories. However, all it did was reinforce how one dimensional the characters have become. They are almost stereotypes of themselves. I could almost forgive that if in exchange for the characters' stagnation you had a thrilling medical who-done-it, but you don't even have that. Port Mortuary does not even have the "big reveal" any more. I saw the ending coming a mile away.
Where is all the suspense you fine in the earlier books? Where is Scarpetta's resolve? Where is all the medicine? What happened to the author I loved so well?

I really enjoyed this book. I enjoy the character of Kay Scarpetta and I enjoy the mystery. Best of all, I think, is the forensic background. I enjoy learning the science behind a lot of it and the politics of how the different departments work together (or don't). I really love how the book leads you in one direction, but ends up in another. I think her books are fun, quick reads. I also think that's what they are supposed to be. If someone wants some literary genius, then maybe they should be looking to read something that has a little more deep in thought.

Not her best. Have to admit to myself that Patricia Cornwell is not writing the same as her earlier books.

The latest in the Scarpetta series and finally one I really enjoyed reading.. the last few in this series were less then par but I continue to read them because I've a fondness for the characters. This last one was set up in a different way and not usual to her way of presenting the story.. I liked it very much..
