Listened to the audio book and didn't finish. Gave up with about 4.5 hours left to listen so way over half way, but I just lost interest in continuing and I finally decided to move on to something else.
A real shame as parts of the book were compelling and really sucked me into the story but other parts rambled and became too complicated to keep track of all the characters, and I found myself a bit lost and disinterested. When was it? Present or past? Who exactly was talking and how did we wind up here? If a story is really gripping me and I get lost I'll take the time to find my way back up to speed but this one just lost me and I didn't care enough to go back over it.
I had high hopes and I'm sad I couldn't plough through it.

This is a strong debut and an author I will keep an eye out for. The writing presented and complimented the story well. There were many narratives that at times made it difficult to follow the connections. Though I enjoyed the characters, I found it hard to engage with them fully. This is what I felt took away from the story. It is something that needs to be read and understood though.
Graphic: Slavery and Violence
Moderate: Death, Racism, Rape, Torture, Grief, and Colonisation
Minor: Kidnapping, Abandonment, and War

I appreciated learning more about this Canadian Black history and I enjoyed the relationships between Linsinda and those around her, especially the old Black woman prisoner.

This one is addictive. Occasionally confusing, but that had more to do with my own mindset as I read. I am now inspired to learn more of this side of history ... It's not a story I know. Yet.

This was incredible. What an amazing debut novel. I wish I could spend more time learning about and living in the minds of each of the perspectives we were granted.
Bouncing perspectives and timelines was exciting and inspiring in its intricacies, but also what made the book ultimately fall from a full 5-star rating for me. If a bit more time had been spent in the in-between periods, I feel like the connection to each of the characters, especially our two main characters, would have been even deeper.
This is already on my re-read & recommend lists.
