I first read this when it was translated into English in 2011, and we read it again for book club this year. I made the interesting choice to listen to it on audio while I drove to and from North Carolina. I'm not a big audiobook listener, and if I had to give it a rating based on listening to this guy butcher Norwegian names and do weird creepy high pitched voices for female characters (plus going into the second reading knowing who the murderer is already), I would probably only give it 3 stars. Still, from my first reading I remember staying up all night unable to sleep until the murderer was caught, as red herring after red herring are thrown into Harry's path. And my first introduction to Harry, who I've now gone back and forth in time with (thanks to the strange translation schedule of the series), perhaps one of the best characters ever written in crime fiction - I still remember my initial fascination with his strange, gruff, insightful, broken, realistic character. This has definitely got me looking forward to [b:The Thirst|32775291|The Thirst (Harry Hole #11)|Jo Nesbø|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1477460802s/32775291.jpg|48764553].

i dont hate it, but writing a serial killer book well is hard
the translation makes the book a bit hard to read, and im not super invested in the story nor the characters

2.5 rounded up to 3. I think I went in with too high of expectations. It was good but I got a little lost in it.

Akin to titles by fellow Scandinavians Henning Mankell and Stieg Larsson, Norwegian author Nesbo spins an exciting, edge-of-your-seat thriller with a whole lot of punch. The “creep” factor is high here so don’t read at bedtime…nightmares of snowmen staring through the window at you are almost guaranteed. Telling the story of a serial killer who is hunting prey in Norway and leaving a snowman at or near the scenes of his crimes, Nesbo weaves terror and strong writing together to tell his teeth-clenching tale. The police detective investigating, Harry Hole, becomes personally attached to the killer after Hole begins to get messages from the killer. A solid, intense thriller by an author who will give fans of Mankell’s Wallander series and Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy a run for their money.
