This was a guilty pleasure kind of story. Basically sex, no real development of the relationship.

I am really on the fence with whether I liked this or not. It was OK/good for erotica but the story is meh. The council sends in armed forces to try to subdue these hidden DNA experiments. The reporter comes to try to 'out them' for their own safety. Reporter meets one of the experiments, pheromones force a mating frenzy, they have sex throughout the book. Instalove. I was expecting more of a story since the book is nearly 300 pages but pretty much that is it. I like my erotica to have a little more of a story, a little more substance and background. This I was expecting to be more PNR but it just wasn't. The first 1/3 of the book was slow and scenes seemed out of place. Scenes that just didn't hold my interest. Then once the hormones hit the sex scenes are hot but some rubbed me the wrong way. I may try reading the 4th book, which is Merinus's brother's book, and give it another try. See if there is more substance to the DNA story and reasonings.

Surprisingly, there was more plot in this that I originally thought there would be but I guess there would have to be with 30 books in the series.
This is mostly mindless smut though.

While not as developed plot wise than her later books this one is still smoking hot. I really needed a cold shower after some of the scenes. Having started this series with Megan's Mark it was interesting to see the beginnings of characters that are established in later books. Of course the world is more fully formed now, but it started out with a clear vision nonetheless.

the plot isn't that great and the story is a bit well weak! but the erotic scenes are very steamy and fun to read if you are into this

I read this book over a decade ago (not that I remember it anymore after 100's of romance and other books) and now I'm listening to the audiobook as I'd like to read or listen to the whole series which stands at over 20 books now!
I cheated a bit by jumping back into the series with Mercury's War to see if Lora Leigh's writing still appealed to me and it did. Unfortunately this first book of the series is NOT appealing to me at all. I'm over halfway through and I HATE that Merinus (a virgin *eye roll*) talks about her wet cunt. I'm sorry, I just can't picture a virgin using that specific word for her vagina. It's my least favorite term for female genitalia although it can be kinda hot when the male H uses it as sexy dirty talk in bed or something. Also, I never want to hear the word frothing in regards to a vagina or vaginal "juices" ever again. This book had a special talent at making sexy scenes ENTIRELY un-sexy.
The whole book so far and the plot has mainly revolved around sex and jumping from sex scene to sex scene. I'm no prude and I prefer more and hotter sex scenes compared to just one to three lackluster, short or vague scenes in a romance book but this book just has zero substance imo.
At this point, I'm not sure if I'll continue to book 2 or skip ahead to the book directly before or after Mercury's War since it seems the series gets better by then.
