A Gentleman's Honor
2.5 Stars

While the murder/espionage plot has definite potential, there are too many implausible twists and turns.

Tony and Alicia have great chemistry, but the number of sex scenes is excessive and Laurens' purple prose is starting to grate on the nerves. I obviously need to take a break from her writing.

I liked Alicia and Tony well enough, but the entire premise of her being able to get away with this random deception (and the grandes dames buying into it, and the complete lack of self awareness in Lady Osbaldstone's comments about the ton when otherwise I really like her as a character) just....killed it for me. Ugh.

Stopped reading in chapter 13 when she wakes up to him having sex with her. He has sex with her while she’s asleep.
That’s sexual assault. That’s rape.

Alicia and her sister, Adriana, have made a desperate bid to save their family. After their parents died, they were left with their three brothers. So they're using the last of their fortune for Alicia, masquerading as a widow, to bring her sister out into society. Hopefully Adriana's good looks will allow her to marry well (and  hopefully for love) and support the rest of them.
Too bad Mr. Ruskin has attached himself to Alicia. And especially bad that, after a somewhat public argument, Alicia is found over his dead body.
Luckily, Tony Blake, Viscount Torrington, is the first to find her. He can immediately tell that she is not the killer in this situation. He is also immediately intrigued by Alicia. So now she has to balance the fact that she is falling in love with this man with the fact that she is supposed to be a widow in the know about how live (and physical love) work. Oh, and there's the tiny matter that someone seems to be working behind the scenes to make society believe that Alicia is a murderer.
Not my favorite in this series but not a bad book at all.

Another great book in the series, Laurens has a great way of keeping you hooked throuhout the book. I love following the stories of the Bastion club. I loved the main characters and enjoyed reading how they came together with a murderer on the loose. With a catch up on the characters from the previous book it was a really good story. Cannot wait to continue in the series. xxx

More reviews available at my blog, Beauty and the Bookworm.

A Gentleman's Honor is the second book in Laurens' "Bastion Club" series, about a group of noblemen during the Regency period who are prime targets on the ton marriage mart and yet are determined to pick their own wives instead of having young women foisted upon them by interfering mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, etc. I read the first book in the series, too, and after finishing this one, I've come to a realization: Laurens doesn't have much variation in her characters. It's a lot of hot, possessive guys and a lot of girls who like to think they're independent but becoming melting messes the second they lay eyes on their love interests.

That said, the book wasn't bad. Actually, I found it more interesting than the first one in the series, and I got through it a good deal quicker, too, but that was mostly because it had a more interesting plot than the first book. That's another thing about these books. They have plots. I would like to call them subplots, because the main plot should be the romance, but...it's kind of not? I mean, there's lots of kissing and sex and all of that good stuff (so much, in this book, that I actually kind of got bored of it...apparently there's a delicate balance for these things in my mind) but there's a plot that goes through it all of Anthony, the main male character, trying to catch someone who has committed treason, and Alicia really ends up on his radar because the traitor is trying to use her as a scapegoat. And meanwhile, Alicia is hiding her own background in the hopes that she'll be able to successfully marry off her younger sister, Adriana. The "catch the traitor" plot in this one was more interesting than the "catch the creepy guy" plot in the first one, but given the repetitiveness of the characters between the first book and this, I doubt the others in the series will be much different, and I probably won't be reading onward.

3 out of 5 stars, but not a memorable 3, if that makes any sense.

Didn't love this. A bit plodding and slow and the mystery was very much a side show and I wanted more from it. Never mind.
