Astonishingly excellent. Vita draws attention to the joy that is reclaiming personal autonomy in a feminist manner, while simultaneously critiquing the external expectations imposed upon women at the time the novel was published. Lady Slane is a marvellous character you will grow to love if you so choose to adopt the perspective that accepting individualism— or isolation, rather— is vital to achieving personal peace.

A delightful read. I was intrigued by the plot and the author delivered with poetic writing and a view of an older world rarely seen.

I absolutely loved the premise and the topics explored. It's very much of its time, of course, but still holds great value and open up important questions - about one's role in life, (unfulfilled) passions and the desire to live one's own way, at least in old age. Beautiful.

An aging woman becomes a widow when her rich politician husband dies. Her children clutch their pearls and say “oh whatever do we do with mother (where’s her money)?” Mother says fuck all y’all, I am gonna move out of this stupid mansion, rent an old, shabby house from two charming gentleman, even if the basement grows mushrooms. I want no visitors, especially NOT young ones. I’m gonna take exactly one deserving grandchild aside and give her the means to pursue art seriously because my bastard husband never let me do that and she has talent. And then I will die. So there.

A great concept but the writing is way too old-fashioned for me to enjoy. I slogggggged slowly through this short little book. I wish I could have enjoyed it.
